I didn't vote, but here's my two cents. Obviously there should be a minimum requirement for quality (finished and working ROM with little to no bugs). Assuming most of a year's releases are at least decent and maybe one third are genuinely fun and sought after, I'd be fine with 12/year. It's slightly about the cost for me, but mostly about my free time. If I hardcore play a third of 12 releases (4 games) each year and essentially collect and rarely play the rest, I'm fine with that. I still have to make some time for Christmas Carol, Worm Whomper, Beamrider, etc. If the annual number increases and I can't keep up, I'll just be more selective.

This is the second person who has said this. Rev (and others)... are you listening? Not 20 or more, like some have predicted for 2016.

I really like Jason's post. Great heads up for me if actually 20 games are released this year as posted by Eric I better prepare for how I collect. One of my goals is to pick up some weekend work next year to support my Intellivision habit.

I really don't believe the 20 will happen, and if it does I am preparing for it! Closer to 12 is a great number for me. Quality, fun and cost are all important considerations as I purchase games.

My only problem is if I work weekends to collect, I can't play as much but I love the collecting ride and the great stuff that has been coming out for all of us!!! :)

Thanks to all of you fun loving folks in the forums, the producers of the games and Happy Holidays!!!! Wolfman

Thanks, Wolfy! I would also be surprised if 20 were actually released in 2016, especially considering the diminished role of Intelligentvision and Elektronite this year. Rev will surely release a decent number of titles and Collectorvision should have at least a couple. BBWW? Christmas Carol 2? Newcomers? :)

Two final thoughts:

1. Rev is very vocal about his big plans for getting us lots of new games...probably more so than other homebrew entities. I welcome his passion and appreciate his communication through the stages of game development. That said, enthusiasm and output aren't always proportional. Every homebrewer has had delays that slow things down and push game releases back. I think he'll exceed the 7 he released in 2015, but 20 would be a tall order for anyone.

2. Not to sound all Chicken Little, but 2016 will be a big year. I'd put money on LTO Flash and Hive finally releasing in the first half of 2016 (if not sooner ;-) ) With Hive will come Rocketeer and Mars Minis. I'm half expecting a release from -dZ. BBWW will likely have at least one. Maybe two from Collectorvision. 10ish from Rev. 2-3 from Elektronite. Imagic Overlays 2.0. Then there are always newcomers. Don't forget about the programming challenge. Like every other year, it's probably best to be ready and start saving.

The planned NEW cartridge shell may be another potential hold up. Ebay lots are not as plentiful cheap as well. Hopefully the new cart shell gets done this year.

But fear not! I have amassed around 1,000 shells. Even after the last batch of games sent out.

cart dominoes?

The 20 number that keeps getting referred to is amongst all the publishers. I'm targeting at least 6, 3 for PRGE. We started warning as far back as last spring that the number of releases was increasing, no one that frequents AA's Intellivision forums can complain they weren't given lots of time to set aside funds. If anything the last couple of days has been even a louder warning:

START SAVING SOME MONEY FOR YOUR HOBBY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU INSIST ON BUYING 2 OF EACH RELEASE!

Great news! Are any of the already-hinted-at games yours? I'm a bit out of the loop on the development/programming side.

I believe 20 could easily happen. I was just suggesting that, with snags and delays, the hype often overshadows the actual flood. I'm really looking forward to 2016 and hope I can make PRGE. 2016 should be a defining year for the Intellivision :)

I just read my last two posts and realized I sort of contradicted myself. I first said "I'd be surprised if 20 games were released", but followed with "I could easily see 20 happening". I'm realistically expecting 15-20 cart/CIB releases (not including multicarts), but who knows.

I can't really say, at least 4 I have told/shown to less than 3 people.

Based on all this, my official Bday wish (in a few days) is for my wife to start working (again) so I can keep up with all these shenanigans 😆

the number of releases was increasing

This right here is the problem. No reason for it. No reason at all. Releasers should be slowing down.

I'm not getting any younger, as a creative person I need to get these out of my head, onto carts and released out the door, It is now or never, consider yourself forewarned.

If a tsunami was coming and you had several months warning, I'd expect you to deal with it and not stubbornly plant yourself in the tornado's path while repeatedly yelling "SLOW DOWN!" at it. Stop banging your head against the wall and deal with it.

Is this how the creative process works?

It could be three possibilities... now, LATER, or never. But somehow, you guys were absent from school when your teachers taught you about the LATER lesson.

Is it too late to add a fourth option to the poll?

"I would like to subscribe to secret release lists free from complaining"

Scratch that, how about

"I would prefer to find out about releases on the day they are released, dont warn me, I like surprises"

Borrowing a concept from another thread, I would not mind seeing a release format of a cart with overlays (overlays optional) in a baggie of the general physical dimensions of an Intellivision box. Have a stiff/durable board inside printed with art/info that would normally appear on the front and rear of a box. Include a hyperlink on the bottom of the board that points to a PDF of a fully-printable box.

That way, everyone who wants a particular title could get it cheaper than a full boxed release, and those that want it can take the PDF to a print shop and get their box printed on sturdy material. It seems like the box requirement impacts cost/price. If a game is released at a show, there is nothing stopping the developer/publisher from doing a small run of boxes just for the show to have an "official CIB release" that the faithful would have no problem paying top-dollar for.

You know there's always the option of not buying everything that's released... I'm sure someone already suggested that but I just can't grasp the need to buy every single home brew release. You know at some point in the future someone will do another limited run of say 20 copies and not everyone will get one.

Couldn't agree more.

As a reformed "buy everything" addict I am much happier not feeling the pressure to own them all and find it quite enjoyable deciding which ones to now purchase.

The game changer for me was when multiple box versions became available with the initial release for Sydney Hunter and Space Raid.

Seemed pointless to have them all.

I don't mind how quickly they come out. I truly understand that the homebrew scene is done as a hobby, as a passion for the game, etc.

My only wish is that there is more qty (bigger batches) released so that if I can't buy in the initial rush then I am not forced to buy a few months later at a higher price off of eBay.

But, again, I know this is done as a hobby, out of house, and the producers don't want to be sitting on stock for extended periods of time.

so I will buy the CIB releases that appeal to me, but (hopefully) buy the ROMs for the others.

The facts are that people rush to buy limited releases, but sit on the fence waiting when they think that there are 'unlimited copies'.

Just ask Rev why he doesn't have a copy of Christmas Carol.

Good. Then you'll only be half disappointed. :P

Perhaps it's because he rather not spend gougetastic prices for a copy on e-Bay...?

Christmas Carol sold 300 copies in just two years, which I think is exceptionally good indeed, especially in such a niche market. And that's following a stalled initial release, two recalls, and no wholesale deals. Remember, this is during the time when Space Patrol took five years to sell 200 copies.

It is true that we somewhat expected the game to be sold indefinitely, but things didn't quite work out that well. And Rev need not worry about missing out too much. If he really wants to play the game, I can make sure he does -- even if I have to hand him one of my personal copies. ;)

-dZ.
