Coleco Chameleon .... hardware speculations?

Recommended Posts

The "vnaguy" rant was about the mildest, most level-headed "rant" that I've ever seen. What a nice guy! Hardly a rant.

I guess I can't help but "pile on," and say that selling his stuff is a real small-ball, low-down gutter-trash move.

But also, the fact that the guy who OWNS GAMEGAVEL uses Ebay to generate some quick (and illegitimate, as it were) cash - is quite telling, indeed. This should be part of a videogame news story. Basically, it's a quiet admission that even the owner of Gamegavel knows that's it's a worthless piece of shit and a waste of time for sellers to even list there, or he'd be listing there, himself. Instead, he'd rather list on Ebay and even pay their formidable fees, because he'll still get more for his stolen shit than if he listed it on his desolate, bullshit auction site. Telling, indeed. Quite a vote of confidence for Gamegavel, directly from the man at the helm.

Every time I think this thread couldn't get stranger, it gets stranger. Did a founder of GameGavel really sell things on a competitor's site? That'd be funny if it weren't for some of you being invested in it (I believe?).

Well in Socal's words I am a "small minority share holder for a minimal amount of money that doesn't matter" (AKA the only friend who bought into his company) But even though that is the case, this is still funny, not Willie's stuff being stolen but the Socal hyjinks.

Yeah, in a world where ebay exists, it's a hard truth that there's just no room for a specialty site like GameGavel.

A few weeks ago I heard about another game auction site for the first time, now I can't remember the name to save my life. They had been in operation for years and I immediately thought about GameGavel. This other site was in the news because they were using some sort of crypto-currency and when things started to go south they froze certain trades and screwed over a bunch of people who had this fake currency saved up. Point of the story is that GameGavel isn't even the only one trying to do this and still no one knows nor cares about specialty game auction sites.

I think there is space for something like gameGavel. But seriously. That website looks like some 90's geocities page. It seriously looks like something that would give your PC a virus. I would blame the webmaster, if for all I know they probably works for very little, and has very precise instructions like: "you know, do something like e-bay, but just for videogames. It's that simple."

So yeah... I'll cut the guy some slack.

Ok, here's the song I was looking for yesterday, when I found the other Mike Kennedy related musical oddity. This is an instrumental, so maybe someone can add some lyrics that match the oh-so-accurate title:

Lyrics, lyrics...

Let's see, What rhymes with weasel?

I just discovered that Mike must've deleted his Twitter account @RetroKennedy. Maybe he got tired of my Tweets with @RetroKennedy and #Fraud

Edit: after searching @RetroKennedy I wasn't the only one

Actually it seems that Gamegavel is not programmed by a mom and pop shop at all, but through a "professional" auction hosting provider. This page showcases Gamegavel as a prime example of their handwork. Their own page looks like a mess.

For $30 a month, we could clone the functionality and steal all his customers*.

*he doesn't have any customers, he doesn't even use the site himself

RETRO Replay: Vol. 1, 200-Page Collector Digest. New Lower Cost + Free Digital Version With Print Purchase

Hi Sucker,

Many of you who already ordered this special edition were sent an email this morning indicating that we have redesigned the issue to be slightly smaller, digest size in order to have a more manageable mailing cost. As indicated, refunds adjusted based on the smaller size and lower mailing cost, will begin going out to all who previously purchased RETRO Replay and all of you received a free download code to also get the digital version.

For those of you who passed on the original offer due to the higher mailing cost, please consider this slightly smaller version. It will still be packed with 200-pages of our best prior content and feature a thicker stock cover making this a convenient, high-quality booklet style collection of material.

You will also get a free digital download code emailed to you after your purchase so you can immediately download the issue as well.

Hi Mike, I hope you didn't order more prints than you can sell! icon_innocent.gif

Willie, sorry to hear about your stuff. That's low. I hope he refunds those people and gets the units back to you. You didn't sound very hopeful in your video, though. :(

Sadly, he was selling on Ebay during the peak of all his promoting of GameGavel several years ago at the very time he was trying to get people with high value and truly unique items to list on GG to drive traffic. I recall specifically calling him out about it on some other forums and I was roundly attacked by Mike Kennedy apologists and Mike himself when I pointed out the serious hypocrisy of asking people to take a chance on his startup business while selling his own high value items on his self described target and major rival, Ebay. Frankly, I'm also pretty disgusted with organizations like SC3 in Southern California that continue to welcome him with open arms to their meetings as a distinguished guest while seemingly ignoring the fraud he attempted to commit with the Chameleon twice on crowdfunding sites and again at the ToyFair.

Yeah, I remember very early on someone called him out for selling his more valuable stuff on eBay, it was probably you. Although as funny as it was, I admire that choice as a rare display of common sense by Mike. Even he knew better than to sell on that site.

The way I see it, it's like inviting John DeLorean to your car show. Who wouldn't want to take their picture with him?! He should embrace his celebrity infamy.

So, if the full size more collectible than the micro size, or should I get BOTH just to be sure?

Dunno, we should ask Mike's wife? Full or Micro? Or Both?

I know I know, cheap hit .... but hey he never learns.

Buy them all and corner the market on retro gaming! While you're at it, can you (or someone else) figure out what the difference in shipping comes out to be? You know, for research, for the SD&R documentary or something. I don't want to put all my info into the cart just for a shipping quote on something I don't want to buy.

At least DeLorean was planning on importing a real, if highly illegal, product to sell that a lot of people would be willing to buy. :D

^ They have a lot in common. Both were big dreamers who [maybe/possibly/very likely] turned to unscrupulous means to try to preserve their dream when it was in danger of collapse. And both carry a stigma because of it, their public image is forever tainted by people's perceptions of what most likely happened even if they deny everything.

John DeLorean is just more similar because he was making an actual product, a car, and with the British government's money (retro crowdfunding!). Unlike other comparisons where said dreamer kills his ex wife or kneecaps her opponent.

Oh, bullshit. Delorean actually created something iconic and unique, in a one-of-a-kind wrapper that still turns heads. M. Kennedy wanted to bring back a worn-out idea from the past, using junkyard molds from a failed game system that no one liked the first time around. It never got off the ground and his "legacy" (if you want to call it that) is one of lies, deception, and empty promises. Don't elevate MK to something he's not.

Pat and Ian covered Willy's story on the latest CU Podcast. Mike Kennedy made this weeks "Scumbag Seller of the Week"

Starts around 1:29 into the show.
