What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2016 (Season 9)

Recommended Posts

My times for the week:

Turbografx-16:
World Court Tennis - 190 min.
Atari Lynx:
Block Out - 3 min.
Checkered Flag - 3 min.
Chip's Challenge - 48 min.
Klax - 4 min.
Ms. Pac-Man - 3 min.
Qix - 4 min.

Beat World Court Tennis early in the week -- the first TG-16 game I've ever beaten. Pretty easy it was, especially given that the gameplay is basically identical to a Famicom game (Family Tennis) that I not only spent hours playing, but actually helped localize into English.

This week I also picked up a Lynx with games (for a very reasonable price), and though it had a couple hardware issues they were easily fixed with my wife's help -- plus the assistance of a kind AA member who sent me an AC adapter (also for a very reasonable price). I need to get more games since what I have is heavy on arcade ports and/or puzzlers, but Chip's Challenge is always fun.

No picture this week since all games played in my household this week were either played via emulation on the Wii or on a 60-in-1 multicade arcade machine. But, on the upside, that does mean that for the first time in quite a while 100% of my household's gaming time this week was tracker eligible! :D

In spite of the lack of physical media being played, it was still a great week for gaming (and especially for Atari) in my household this week. The misses is still on her Pac-Man kick, I played a whole lot of fantastic homebrews and some rare games that I never got the chance to try out the original cartridges of, and we ended up spending a good bit of time together doing full co-op play throughs of Dark Chambers for both the 2600 and 7800. Surprisingly we both liked the 2600 a fair a bit more for it's larger more complex level layouts and the higher degree of difficulty, but the 7800 version was still a ton fun and a really good looking Gauntlet style game.

The standout favorites for me this week Alien Brigade on the 7800, followed by Brik, Lady Bug, and Espial all for the 2600. Alien Brigade is without a doubt my new favorite 8-bit light gun shooter and it really shows off what the 7800 can do. The graphics and gameplay are both outstanding and I can safely say that it honestly puts every other 8-bit light gun game I've played to shame, NES and Master System titles included. Lady Bug continues to be one of my favorite Atari 2600 homebrews and definitely one that I need to pick up a copy of when I'm able to start rebuilding my Atari 2600 collection again, and the same goes for Brik and Espial. The former being a wonderfully fun and challenging game that is a basically a simplified homebrew version of Arkanoid, and the later being a rather rare and absurdly expensive but very challenging and visually impressive original production vertical scrolling spaceship shooter from Tiger Electronics. Up until this week I had no idea that Tiger even made games for the Atari 2600, and I certainly didn't expect any of them to be good, but I'm very pleased to say that Espial (and Threshold as well) proved me wrong. :)

As previously mentioned the misses played a ton of Pac-Man variations this week, but she also spent a good bit of time with Pete Rose Baseball for the 2600 (playing and restarting it several times until she finally got the gameplay mechanics down well enough to beat the computer), played a little Donkey Kong on various platforms, did some adventuring in Dungeon on the 2600—a longstanding favorite RPG of hers—and Dungeon Stalker for the 7800, then tried out three different versions of Kung-Fu Master with me. Her favorite was the NES version for added control options and graphical complexity, but I think I still like the 2600 version the best just because of how darn impressive it is to see running on the VCS. I will admit that it is pretty awesome being able to 1 hit K.O. some of the bosses in the NES version with a flying jump kick to the face though! Hiiii yah!

I'm not too sure what next week will have in store gaming wise, since the misses' Wii arcade stick sadly broke down yesterday and needs the cord that connects the control board to the Wii remote replaced, but I did get a parts order for one in with Mad Catz so hopefully we'll get it fixed up and working again sooner rather than later. In the meantime, what next week holds is anybody's guess!

I would like to tell all participants more news.

A new prize which I won from the 2016 Summer Contests at HighScore.com arrived this week. The official competition (Atari Systems Worldwide Trophy Cracking - 2600 / 5200 / 7800 / LYNX / 8-bit / ST / Jaguar) started on June 24th 2016 and ended on August 28th 2016.

During the contest period, I played Atari 2600, 5200 and 7800 games on emulators, except Missile Command which I played with Atari 7800 Prosystem Console. Since the level of competition and number of participants were lower than I expected, I won this contest easily. Here are the final numbers just to let all participants know:

The prize which I won is an Edladdin Super 78 Joystick for use with Atari 7800 Prosystem Console. Also, I received 2 homebrew cartridges to play on 7800 console - FAT AXL and SCAMMER BRAWLER.

With the new controller, I will have fun more and more!

This has been a slow week for the family and gaming. The only one who got a chance to play was my older son:

TI-99/4A

Snake Plissken: 15 minutes

Exhausted after running yet around retro gaming expo. Meager output on the game playing front, mostly it was about power on, see that things are working, moving on to the next. With some liberal definition of the word "played", I can add:

Channel F:

Drag Race - 2 min.

... although I spent those minutes figuring out how to play the game, i.e. how to avoid both driving against red lights and stalling the engine. I never succeeded, then it was time to move on.

NES:

Noah's Ark (Konami): 11 min

SNES:

Air Cavalry: 3 min

Indy Car feat. Nigel Mansell: 7 min

Lamborghini American Challenge: 4 min

Had a little time to test some recent pickups. The only notable one is Noah's Ark. I was curious about one of the few licensed "christian" games in existence, so when I found it for a decent enough price, I grabbed it.

The SNES games are all going deep into my low-priority box. Very deep.

Oh, man, Air Cavalry. I may be the world's leading expert on that game, and not by choice. LMK if you end up playing it and want tips.

Well... congratulations! ... I guess... :P

Thanks for the offer, but I have a feeling that it won't get any more playtime. I really have no patience these days for such games. It's clear from the start that the hardware can't handle a game like that.

To be clear, it's a terrible game, though I got some vague satisfaction from conquering it. But it's basically an object lesson in how not to write a first-person helicopter game; so many things about it are just plain wrong, from the physics to the collision detection to the...sigh.

If you want to play a much better (though still imperfect) helicopter game on a Nintendo cartridge system, Chopper Attack is kinda fun.

Here are my times for this past week:

Online (non-eligible):

Mario Bros. DCR - 5 min.

Mario Bros. WSF - 4 min.

MS-DOS:

Mario's Cement Factory (Simulator) - 77 min. in 5 sessions

Windows (non-eligible):

Mario Bros. (Madrigal) - 12 min.

The only thing I played this week was some simulations of Game & Watch games. I tried three different simulators for Mario Bros., two online and one offline. The online ones both have got their flaws... the DCR version doesn't correctly give you 12 points if you complete a truck, and the WSF version doesn't prevent boxes appearing in parallel to each other so that you had to service multiple lanes at once. The offline version by Madrigal works correctly as far as I've seen.

For Mario's Cement Factory, I downloaded a simulator which was written in 2000 for MS-DOS and works pretty well, although it doesn't clear your misses at 300 points like most Game & Watch games do... I don't know if this is a mistake or if the original game also doesn't do this. Sadly, I mostly died by stepping into air when there was no elevator in the place where I stepped into.

ATARI 2600:

Missile Command (console) - 20 minutes

Pac-Man (console) - 35 minutes

Pitfall II: Lost Caverns (Stella) - 32 minutes

On Pitfall II for the 2nd round of Bronze Medal Tournament on 2600 NEW HSC Season 5 (with my opponent classicgamer_27330), I was SOOOO CLOOOSE to finish this game with a perfect score of 199,000 points, but I LOST MY CONCENTRATION by touching the last enemy - a dangerous frog! My high score obtained this week is 193,295 points.

My cousin played Missile Command and Pac-Man with 7800 Console just to have fun and try the Super 78 Edladdin Joystick.

I played Pac-Man with both controllers (Sega Master System and Super 78), but until now I played better with SMS.

ATARI 5200:

Megamania (Altirra) - 45 minutes

Played for 5200 HSC Season 9. High score of this week: 107,640 points.

ATARI 7800:

Fat Axl (console and emulator) - 34 minutes

Scammer Brawler (console and emulator) - 5 minutes

Pole Position II (console) - 37 minutes

For the first time, I played 7800 games on Prosystem Console just to test my Edladdin Super 78 and 2 homebrew cartridges which I won as part of HighScore.com competition - 2016 Summer Contests, Atari Systems. And I have a copy of Pole Position II which I bought at Sydnei Games in Curitiba after the Brazilian Independence Day - it was very, very fun!

My cousin played Fat Axl and Pole Position II just for fun!

My high scores on Pole Position II obtained when I tested my new controller:

Test Track (easiest track) - 72,450 points post-24681-0-96408000-1475441147_thumb.jpg

Fuji Track (medium track) - 52,550 points post-24681-0-96914300-1475441157_thumb.jpg

Seaside Track (hard) - 40,920 points post-24681-0-72102400-1475441184_thumb.jpg

Suzuka Track (brutal) - 21,150 points post-24681-0-51574600-1475441209_thumb.jpg

Backing off of Kaboom! for a few weeks to compete in the HSC Silver Medal Bracket. (Well, I hope I advance to the next round.)

It was a pretty slow week for my household this week, but we still managed to get some tracker eligible gaming time in. :)

1JIHBGl.jpg

Ineligible
Dead Space: Extraction (Nintendo Wii) - 285 minutes

Arcade
Centipede - 6 minutes
Donkey Kong - 10 minutes
Gauntlet (Played on Midway Presents Arcade's Greatest Hits: The Atari Collection 2 for PlayStation) - 11 minutes

Megamania - 12 minutes
Pitfall II: Lost Caverns - 47 minutes

PlayStation
Resident Evil: Director's Cut - 181 minutes
Resident Evil 2 - 27 minutes

Total Play Time This Week
608 minutes (10 hours 8 minutes) [323 minutes eligible]

Individual System Play Times This Week
Nintendo Wii: 285 minutes
PlayStation: 208 minutes
Atari 2600: 59 minutes
Arcade: 56 minutes

The overall slowness of the week around here was largely due to a hardware failure Monday morning, which killed a lot of the desire to play video games this week. The cord that connects the Mad Catz Tatsunoko vs Capcom Wii arcade stick (which is what both the misses and I use to play emulated games for Atari 2600, 7800, ColecoVision, and many other systems on the Wii) to the Wii remote to allow it to function as a Classic Controller had something go wrong with it and now the signal between the arcade stick and the Wii remote cuts out every 5 seconds or so. I was just going to replace the cord with another one from a Classic Controller or Nunchuck, but I quickly found out that the cord that Mad Catz decided to use for the TvC stick is proprietary and has an extra wire that other Wii controller cords don't have, making it non-replaceable and rendering the arcade stick a big heavy paperweight. At this point we've got the TvC stick up for sale for parts on eBay, and the whole experience was disheartening enough that neither of us felt like playing much in the way of games until the weekend.

When the weekend did roll around though I managed to get in a little Atari on the Game Boy Advance before breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, and the misses decided that since halloween is now less than a month away it would be a good time to revisit the original Resident Evil series on the PlayStation. She ended up doing a pretty awesome speed run through Resident Evil: Director's Cut, saving both teammates finishing it in 2 hours and 40 minutes, then started in on Resident Evil 2. That got me in the mood to do a little seasonally appropriate gaming as well, so I started a new game in Dead Space: Extraction for the Wii. I've already played through it a couple times earlier in the year, but Dead Space: Extraction is by far my all time favorite on-rails shooter so I was happy to go back and give it another play through.

As far as what next week has in store, I think it's pretty likely that the misses will be continuing her tour through the Resident Evil games on the original PlayStation and I definitely plan to finish Dead Space Extraction. I can't see there being much Atari 2600 or 7800 play time in our future for the next week or two until we are able to pick up an original Atari 2600 or 7800 system and a Harmony Encore cart (which is on the agenda this month) or are able to replace the Wii arcade stick, but there should still be plenty of good gaming to be had on other systems in the meantime. :)

Oh crap almost forgot to post.

Neo Geo

NAM-1975 - 190 minutes

Annnd that's all. I've been out doing the driving stuff for the test which isn't for a few months and working on finishing up the arcade (almost done!) so NAM-1975 has been my test game for some reason. Simple enough gameplay, easy to pick up and play, and it's got some challenge to it - I like it.

7. Arcade (80)

8. PC (DOS) (77)

10. Fairchild Channel F (67)

In a week with low minutes but high platform diversity, it's Mario Bros. that gets the top spot in a 3-way sweep for the Atari 2600.

With 1130 minutes logged to date, Mario Bros. is also one of three games that join the 1000-minute club this week, claiming spots #236-238. The other two are Resident Evil: Director's Cut (1093 min.) and the arcade version of Donkey Kong (1009 min.), which was the mystery game with 999 minutes last week.

Also note the rare appearance of the Channel F, which sneaks in at the bottom of two charts: an honorable place to be this week, I think, given what game is at #10 on the other chart.

The overall slowness of the week around here was largely due to a hardware failure Monday morning,

FYI - I have a couple adapters that let me use PS2 controllers on the Wii. Something like that would open up a whole bunch more options for Arcade sticks.

I think I got them on DX.com years ago. Still work fine.

I didn't make it to the finals of the silver medal bracket. That's ok because I don't like the list of games to be played.

This gives me more time for Kaboom! this week although I will try to still cut back.

ATARI 2600:

Centipede - 23 minutes

Crackpots - 13 minutes

Ms. Pac-Man - 102 minutes

Pac-Man - 30 minutes

Pitfall II: Lost Caverns - 45 minutes

Stargate / Defender II - 14 minutes

ATARI 7800:

Fat Axl - 20 minutes

Ms. Pac-Man - 120 minutes

Pole Position II - 30 minutes

Scammer Brawler - 10 minutes

With my perfect score of 199,000 points on Pitfall II, I passed to the Bronze Medal Tournament Finals, with my opponent McCallister. The games which I'm playing for the finals are Centipede, Crackpots and Stargate - there's a prize for winners of Medal Bracket Challenge.

New High Score Club on Atari 7800 category has begun with Ms. Pac-Man, which includes the 2600 version of this classic arcade game for bonus points, Now, Mister-VCS is the moderator of 7800 HSC. Check out and visit the NEW 7800 HSC Contests: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/257738-new7800hsc-season-1-game-1-mspac-man/

I got my new high scores with my Atari 7800 Console, which is very fun (depending on the games played, I used Sega Master System / Super 78 Edladdin controller):

  • 2600 Pac-Man, Game 3BB - 31,000 points
  • 7800 Pole Position II Test Track - 74,550 points (so close to the perfect score of 74,750 points)
  • 7800 Pole Position II Fuji Track - 65,000 to 70,000-point range
  • 7800 Pole Position II Seaside Track - circa 50,000 points
  • 7800 Pole Position II Suzuka Track - 25,000 to 30,000-point range
  • 7800 Fat Axl - circa 30,000 points
