Final Fantasy Tactics and the PS 2

There is a short list of original PlayStation games that are not compatible with the PS 2.

 

According to Wikipedia, the model SCPH-30001 has unspecified problems with Final Fantasy Tactics (FFT).

 

I have a slim-model PS 2, purchased in 2008, and it consistently crashes about 10 minutes into FFT (just before the second battle). The game works just fine on my old, original PlayStation console.

 

I noticed that the disk is somewhat scratched -- I bought it used, probably 10 years ago -- could that be the cause of the problem on the PS 2?
