MaDDuck #1 Posted January 9, 2016 Hey!!! I'm looking at enhancing my GG screen, and I've narrowed it down to two options: 1. Keep the original screen, but use the backlight from an old DS Lite to illuminate it. Or 2. Put a new screen in it. Something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251646254707?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It is beyond my skill level, is there anyone here that can either mod it or recommend someone that can? If so, I will supply all parts, etc...
7800fan #2 Posted January 10, 2016 Option 1 would only cut down power usage by removing CCFL but it won't improve the LCD much. Option 2 requires RGB board and playing GG games would mean smaller viewing screen because the RGB board does not have option to scale up GG screen. Option 3: if you got about $150 to burn ask McWill http://atariage.com/forums/user/38984-mcwill/for a GG LCD You can see my post with pictures on modded GG: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/233632-lynx-lcd-replacementvga-out-by-mcwill/page-30#entry3320554 McWill mod does scale GG screen to fit the LCD and if you enabled it by wiring those 3 buttons you can change modes anytime. Full screen, preserved aspect (no distorted pixels), with and without scanline.

Hmmmm So changing the backlight would only save battery life, which I don't give an F about, but not make the screen itself look any better? That's a bummer The upscaling issue is something I was worrying about anyway. So option 3 sounds good. I'll PM him and see what we can do. Thanks a million for the help. MaDDuck #4 Posted January 10, 2016 Does the about $150 include a GG or will I send mine to Germany? I don't want a TV out option, hopefully He'll let me save a few $$ or DM on it.
MotoRacer #5 Posted January 10, 2016 (edited) If I can put my input in, I'd heavily suggest a new lcd screen. I can't speak for GameGear, but I had this done to the Nomad, and you get the old school feeling of the original casing and buttons, but a beautiful picture in the right aspect ratio. With the bezel/screen protector, you won't even visually notice it's not a real GameGear screen, other than the clarity. Remember, it's not just the brightness or battery life. It's the screen blur. Ever try playing side scrollers on a GameGear? I think it would constitute as torture in some countries, haha . I think it was Sonic Triple Trouble where I basically just ran to the right and jumped, eventually finding myself at the big ring unsure as to how I got there. The screen on the GG was terrible, especially for Sega's flagship series.
Mitch_repp #7 Posted January 19, 2020 I've found the same screen and PCB on AliExpress for around 65$. I'm thinking of doing my own screen mod as well as a rechargeable AAA battery setup through USB c also micro HDMI out. I found the micro HDMI outboard but I'm not really sure how to hook it up yet. if anybody knows anything about HDMI out for the game gear doesn't have to be micro standard HDMI is awesome
