Mod chips for PSone

What's the best mod chip, in terms of being able to play imports and backing up, coupled with eas of install for the PSOne? I happened into a PS1 at a garage sale and was curious

What I do for the PSone, not the grey Playstation 1, is the paperclip trick with a copy of the Action Replay disc for the original Playstation that came with the PS2 version. There's a video of the procedure on YouTube, just be sure the disc isn't spinning when you swap discs. This is way easier than it is on the Sega Saturn. The only downside is you can't close the lid while playing a game, so playing on the portable screen wouldn't be easy. If you can deal with that then I'd recommend this over a modchip.
