Lightest (least heavy) CRT TVs around 20"-24"?

Recommended Posts

CRTs are generally pretty heavy. It seems that even a normal 20" CRT TV is around 40-50 lbs. Did they ever make anything lighter than that in that size range? It'd really be nice to find one to lug up the stairs that doesn't require a pulley system lol

I have seen some of the very last CRTs made which are SMALLER overall....that is, the casing. I came across a Samsung CRT recently, maybe one of the last they made, where the casing was very "sculpted" and tight to the guts in the back. Can't say it actually made it much lighter than anything else as i didn't pick it up.

I have noticed that REALLY cheap later brands, where the casing on the back is shaped mostly around the back of the tube alone, were pretty light, I had one or two of these. But these seem to be often RF only models. I'm talking bottom of the barrel K Mart-brand CRTs here.

I'd say look for late 80's early 90's TV.

Late CRT grew more and more heavy because of the flat screen and square corner.

To make a screen flatter, you have to still have a curved surface fro the beam, and have a "lens" effect applied : more glass, more weight.

And to make square corners, you have to put more tube out of view. More glass : more weight.

I have a 55cm (21" )TV made in 1983 (approx) it's the lightest of all the ones I have. There is like two large PCB in (unlike my 1977 color TV that is filled to the brim with PCB with transforemrs and transistors, weighs much more... and it's a 43 cm, not a 55 :P ) and the shell is thick plastic.

I have never weighted it, but I'd say the weight is barely 30kgs (44lbs).

Heh if I think about it, I'll try to weight it tomorrow.
