Weirdest Peripheral

Recommended Posts

Weirdest commercial product would have to be this Quickshot Aviator.

Weirdest, as in most unique, would currently have to be my 5200 Trak-Ball modded to work with the 2600.

I thought it was 2600 peripherals. In general, the NES Power Glove would have to be a candidate. Fairly common, but weird.

The laser scope. You had to yell "FIRE!" to get it to shoot, while aiming with the crosshairs in your eyepiece.

I think needing to yell into the mic is a bit excessive but the concept of just aiming with an eye-pieceI thought was SO cool.

Never used one but ads in comic books back in the day always made me to at least try one out.

I remember trying to fashion a scope for my Sega Light Phaser out of a cardboard tube mounted atop it with strings for cross hairs on it, but I could never calibrate the sights on it just right so eventually gave up... that would be the weirdest peripheral I could think of!

I will say, the NES Speed Board by LJN seemed pretty stupid, but I remember my friend's little sister actually played games that way. In that she'd sit on the floor (as most of us did back then), lay the controller on the floor in front of her and use both index fingers, one on the D-pad and one on the A & B buttons... she would have appreciated it I guess!

I've got one of those Laser Scope headsets, they're pretty goofy. I've also got a LipStick that's used by a handful of Commodore 64 games.

For the 2600, my "weirdest" peripherals are probably my Game Brain cartridge selectors, my wireless joysticks (made by the same company as the Game Brain), my Starplex and Track & Field controllers, my Supercharger, and my Magicard repro. The Magicard probably falls more under "game" than "peripheral," but being a 2600 programming utility--FOR the 2600--that you can even build a cassette interface for for storage/retrieval is pretty unique*.

I've also got a bunch of weird joysticks but nothing really outlandish as far as design goes; my Triga Command, Zircon Video Command, and Epyx 500XJ are some of the more unusual ones.

*Note to self: I still need a Compumate.

My rarest peripheral for my Atari systems would have to be my pair of Newport Pro-Stick 1 controllers. If they weren't slightly odd to hold and use they would be the best controllers I've got as they both still work really well today.
