John Romero makes first new DOOM map in 21 years

John Romero, recently made a new DOOM map in 21 years. Pretty cool stuff.

And to those who aren't familiar with playing custom DOOM maps...

 

1. Make sure you have the DOOM.wad file and any DOOM source port (I recommend zDoom: http://zdoom.org/Download )

 

2. Download the map

 

3. Once you download it, double click it and open it using zDoom.

 

4. Open up the command line and type in: MAP E1M8 - PHOBOS ANOMALY

Oh I am so downloading and playing this tonight! I usually play the Game Boy Advance, PlayStation, or Xbox 360 ports of Doom and Doom II, but I will totally fire up DOSBox for this!

It's a pretty decent map, but I'd like to see what he would do if he really got serious about making Doom levels. There are a lot of .WADs that blow this away.

Interesting that it's a Doom 1 level; everyone and their mom uses Doom II for their .WADs (for good reasons).

This feels like was E1M8 should have been in the first place. The original map always felt underwhelming to me - it's just a corridor with an arena and two Barons of Hell at the end. Yawn. This new map forces you to use everything you learn in the first episode to survive a huge gauntlet, and the fight at the end is made more challenging by the addition of barrels that can blow you to shreds if you just fire rockets around all willy-nilly.
