According to Gary Kitchen (via Digital Press) the game was programmed to max out it's difficulty around 100K because it wasn't thought that people would be able to get beyond that score. After 100K, the game pretty much resets in difficulty but it doesn't really increase incrementally. The difficulty seems to randomly change (if that makes any sense.) Around 80K, the fireballs start shaking (or, what Gary calls "being aggressive.") This is a sign that you've reached the maximum difficulty. I must have had really good patience back then. It seems the rivets get buggy around 81K and then reset to easy around 115K. The barrels reset to "easy" later for some reason.
