He can get more money for them that way.

Yep, that's exactly it. Not uncommon to see people sell the loose manuals for rare games separately from the carts.

That's too bad... sure you could got more $$$, but it's not good for the item.

That's not necessarily true.

Collectors who have half the Tooth Protectors set (there is no standard box) are more motivated to bid and are therefore more likely to win a separate item auction than those with neither item. Should a collector who has only the loose cartridge win the auction for the instructions, they will split up one collectible pair while completing another. The same thing is true of a "manual only" owner who wins the loose cartridge. Therefore, it is entirely possible that TWO completed collectible sets of Tooth Protectors may be created from the break up of this one collectible set. How can that be bad for the item?

The separate auctions might be won by the same bidder. Should this happen, clearly the collectible item is no worse off than it was before.

The final possibility is that the separate auctions will be won by diffferent people who own neither the cartridge nor the manual. But keep in mind that BOTH auctions would have to go this route in order for the hobby to have lost a collectible pair. I don't think this is as likely a scenario as the first.

So we have 4 possibilities:

1. Both items are sold to complete two different sets.

2. One item completes a set (for a loose cart owner) and destroys a set.

3. One item completes a set ( for a manual owner) and destroys a set.

4. Both items sell to new owners, thus destroying one set.

Only one scenario in four actually turns out "bad for the item". But even in this case, the breaking up of the one set has created two new collectors hungry to hunt down the missing component of their set, making it more likely than before that the orphaned component items, wherever they may be, will finally find their way home.
