makary
Hi everyone, I just want to share some tunes I made using 15 kHz clocked Pokey in basic version of Raster Music Tracker (1.28). I believe they sound a bit different than tunes made with a regular clock (64 kHz). So check please if you wish and enjoy! I think they sound best when listened to on a real hardware, therefore I made recordings also and put on my bandcamp profile. So if someone doesn't use a real piece of hardware, please follow the links: http://makarybrauner.bandcamp.com/track/echoes http://makarybrauner.bandcamp.com/track/step-it-up EchoesMB.xex StepItUpMB.xex
Rybags
(listened to the web-based) Some nice use of the high frequency stuff there, especially Echoes. Step it up - in parts reminds me of Ridiculous Reality songs. In both cases, unconventional and original sounding.
Bryan
Thanks. I enjoyed that.
analmux
@ makary It seems that you also don't like the standard 64 kHz mode. The 15 kHz mode gives a possibility for 8-bit AUDF values and square bass notes. Do you have new PoKey ideas? Then maybe you can study RMT 1.28 Patch 8, which is especially made for the 15 kHz mode. Here you can find patch 8, some example tunes and YouTube links: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/234769-rmt-patch-8/

makary
Thank you all for your kind remarks I really appreciate them. @ analmux: I've just started using the patched RMT couple weeks ago and I am about to share a tune made with it. Just keep waiting please I think you've done great work regarding upper octaves tuning and interesting timbres. And yes, I prefer 15kHz mode because I like music having proper amount of low-end frequencies present.

analmux
Anyway, nice to hear that you did a try with sawtooth waves. RMT 1.28 Patch 8 can help a bit: it has a special sawtooth table (36 notes).
makary
Right, that's cool. For instance in the tune I shared, the sawtooth melody can't be more complicated because there are only few notes in tune. That's the weakness of the regular RMT. makary
Here's some effect of exploring the RMT patched by Analmux. Enjoy Link to the real hardware recording: http://makarybrauner.bandcamp.com/track/prism PrismMB.xex
Heaven/TQA
Sounds cool.... Reminds me little bit chamber of shaolin.
analmux
Nice to listen to your new tune. But I'm not yet sure you like the usage and the possibilities of RMT Patch 8. If you have some questions about Patch 8, let me know. Edited February 28, 2016 by analmux
Paul Westphal
Great! I will demo these at the Rose City Atari Club.
makary
thanks! @analmux: I like the both things you mentioned The point is that I like composing music but I'm not good at talking about composing music Still I'm collecting some remarks about the patch and will share for sure. @Paul Westphal: nice! Send me please a note / photo / anything after the event how everything went Edited February 29, 2016 by makary
billkendrick
I think they sound best when listened to on a real hardware, therefore I made recordings also and put on my bandcamp profile. So if someone doesn't use a real piece of hardware, please follow the links: Atari800 2.2.1 on my Linux laptop did a pretty good job, but yeah, not perfect. Thanks for posting the songs to bandcamp, too.
makary
I think emulators work pretty well regarding Pokey, in case of my tunes at least . However I believe they lack the "harshness" that comes from the real chip. As if some sort of soft compression is applied to the sound. Its just a detail but still changes overall "sonic experience" slightly
makary
Some time ago I saw my kids dancing to some cartoon tune. Just the way only small kids can jiggle around, you know what I mean probably. 'That calls for some pokey song' I thought So this time no experimenting etc., just simple song and positive mood. Anyway, enjoy! makary
Once again exploring the Patch 8 abilities. A bit YM-ish bass I think. I'll appreciate any feedback, opinions or critical comments You can listen to the attached tune recorded from the real hardware: http://makarybrauner.bandcamp.com/track/bike-ride You can also listen to and/or download recordings of all the tunes I made in the 15 kHz mode up to now: https://makarybrauner.bandcamp.com/album/pky-15 BikeRideMB.xex
emkay
Once again exploring the Patch 8 abilities. A bit YM-ish bass I think. I'll appreciate any feedback, opinions or critical comments I gave this one a like, because the tune has some nice parts in it. The start is a little bit "unlikely" , as gen. 2 sometimes still doesn't sound like music. Let's see , if we get some demos around those tunes. makary
@emkay: thanks. As regards demos: those tunes are CPU consuming (4 frames). For creating demo/game music another approach is needed.
emkay
@emkay: thanks. As regards demos: those tunes are CPU consuming (4 frames). For creating demo/game music another approach is needed. Some demos should be possible as ANTIC offers low DMA / memory using modes which could be used for GTIA ...
analmux
@ makary It's nice that you like using Patch 8 to write another song. But I didn't see a crew credit on your webside, showing that you used RMT 1.28 Patch 8 and who wrote this patch.
makary
@ analmux Fixed! I'm sorry.
makary
@ analmux I think it's fair to say that I didn't write that tune using Patch 8. I wrote it couple years ago using Jeskola Buzz and left aside. I recently 'ported' it to A8 using Patch 8. Generally I compose music using my old piano, write ideas using Renoise or Cubase, do sound desing using Access Virus. When I want to use ideas for A8 music I eventually translate everything into 'Pokeish' using RMT, Patch 8 or TMC 2.0. All ingredients are equally important in the process. As regards know-how, I refer often to Synth Secrets series: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/allsynthsecrets.htm and try to apply that knowledge into Pokey sound generation abilities. At the beginning I tried to learn about Pokey, 15 kHz etc from forums but... well, I usually quit reading threads in a minute due to 'sid vs pokey' or 'out of tune/in tune' quarrels etc. That can be interesting but it's not very useful musical knowledge for me personally Therefore beside the Synth Secrets I only rely on some Pokey specification, Raster's and Jaskier's manuals and in case of Patch 8 your tuning and distortion tables.
