Valentine's Day is a perfect time to hold something like this. So many people put their lives on hold because Hallmark told them today is the one and only day to be romantic. Those of us with any common sense end up with a wasted day as many of our friends get grounded.

 

 

I hope you enjoy spending your Valentine's Day sticking it to the man, doing something truly unique and individualistic... like attending a convention full of unique snowflakes like you.

 

Me? I'll spend some quality time with my favourite person in the world, and do something with both enjoy.

Except that in Spanish, we do not have phonemes where a sibilant starts a word followed by another consonant. The "s" sound must always be surrounded by a vowel, either before or after.

 

Thus, it is "estupido" in Spanish.

 

This is more than just "proper" Spanish, it is a phonetic limitation of the speaker, since the sound does not exist in their vocabulary. This is a hallmark of the accent of Spanish speakers when attempting English, for instance, when they say "diss is my esstory ("this is my story"), "you esstand derr" ("you stand there"), etc.

ok its not "proper" spanish. How bout spanglish? Is that the right term? i dont know a whole lot of spanish so i speak more of the spanglish variety.

What I meant to say is that the word is Spanish is "estupido," not "stupido."

 

And yes, there is such a thing as Spanglish, it's how we speak regularly in Puerto Rico, with a mixture of both languages.

As my wife has Salvadoran roots, I can also attest that Spanglish has irregular uses also (eg when delivering expressions of displeasure).

That's because, it doesn't matter how imbued in a language you get, nor how much you use it in practice, our brains remain hard-wired to swear in the original language in which they were programmed.
