My friend Pat and I asked our wives if they wanted to go this time...they still haven't stopped laughing at us.

 

I sucker mine in by including a trip to the outlet mall on Friday.

For anyone who has yet to book their hotel:

• If you plan to only stay a couple days for the Expo or you plan to buy a huge pile of loot, get a hotel on the east side of the river near the Oregon Convention Center.
• If you plan stay longer and check out the city, get a hotel on the west side of the river in the downtown area. There are more walking distance restaurants, shops, etc. Portland's streetcar/lightrail service is great and drops you off right next to the Convention Center on the days you need it.

This advice is free; remember that you get what you pay for.

I would love to go this year but can't swing the finances. Some year I'll have to set up a card table outside and make boxes by hand for tips, lol

OK, scratch that. DoubleTree cancelled, Eastlund it is (again)! Got an email today, 25% off their "best" rate, free valet parking (all parking seems to cost like $20/night in downtown Portland), and free microbrew + special glasses in your fridge when you arrive. Ended up saving like $100 for the trip.

 

Just under $200 after tax per night. Pricey, like much of Portland is, but not bad considering it's literally across the street from the show. And I love these little boutique hotels. For anyone interested, I'm pretty sure this promo code will work for "anyone" - just use promo code BEER and see if it comes up.

I forgot the name right now, but I stayed at some hipsterish motel that let you write on the doors with chalk. I was able to just walk to the convention center, and hit some dive bars on the way back.

The Jupiter: my wife and I like that place and have been there a few times. The Doug Fir restaurant has still has good food, though it used to be fantastic.
