Cybergoth #1 Posted April 22, 2003 Hi there! I always hated both of the series, basically because they where almost uncontrolable with a normal gamepad and I never got into using analog joysticks. How did you like them Rebel Assaults? BTW: In an old German mag I found info that Rebel Assault 2 originally was supposed to be "Imperial Assault", where, just like in "Tie Fighter", you'd play for the dark side. Too bad they changed that, or? Greetings, Manuel
Maarten Martens #2 Posted April 22, 2003 I loved Revel Assualt. I always used a mouse to control it. Ah, the memories. I didn't like part 2, that was way to easy, completed it the first time I played it. Cheers,
Nukey Shay #3 Posted April 22, 2003 I hated Rebel Assault...notably the way that the game drags you around instead of having more freedom as in the Xwing series (Especially Xwing Alliance).
angrybrit #4 Posted April 22, 2003 I'm still waiting for a massive on-line multiplayer Tie-fighter versus X-Wing dogfighter game. Just think about it. 64 players fighters battling out in outer space!!!
PuddWakkr #5 Posted April 22, 2003 Wow 64 people in space at one time...talk about confusing. "Red Leader to Red 57 take out that cannon" "Copy Red Leader...Red 57 out" "Gold Leaer to Gold 28 take out Red 57..No wait I mean the Starship" "Copy Gold Leader ..." I couldn't type fast enough. It would be total chaos, and that wouldn't really be such a bad thing.
Witchfynde #6 Posted April 22, 2003 The only Rebel Assault I played was for the Sega CD, which I heard the PC version's a little better, but that's not saying much. Even though it gives you different things to do, you don't feel *TOTALLY* involved, for some reason. One thing that I thought was stupid was when it first came out and those boneheads at the magazine where three of them rate each game (I think it's Electronic Gaming), and they used to copy what each reviewer said all the time back then (hopefully they don't do that any more), and each one stupidly whined about the game designers not doing much with the color pallettes, everything's white white white, which was dumb, since that was the least of the game's problems. I've always wanted to play the Star Wars games with a voice headset, but no one is playing XWA or XvT any longer. Crimson Skies for XBOX is supposed to use the online features when it finally ships this fall (a year late!) and it seems that a SW-based dogfighting game would sell systems. I liked Rebel Assault at the time simply because of the Star Wars music. I knew at the time that it was shallow and silly a la "Astron Belt" in the arcade, but I still liked it for what it was. Yeah, I liked both ok too, and especially how, several years later, Sega took some elements of R. Assault and made them into more fun, faster counterparts for their Star Wars Trilogy game in the arcades (like the Hoth FPS scene inside the base), even though it's just a shooter/memorization game, I still had a lot of fun with it. Invader_dag #9 Posted April 22, 2003 Rebel Assualt was my cd rom game. Got it with a cd rom drive actually... i was only about 6 at the time. Yeah, it sucked, bad. But it was kinda fun at the time. I got that lucas archives collection one time, and it came with rebel assualt 2. Which i liked the whole cloaking tie fighter thing, but the game sucked even more than before. But what i always liked about Lucasarts is how they aren`t affraid to let you play as the bad guys. But yeah, it sucked, the second one sucked more, but they both suck
King Atari #10 Posted April 22, 2003 I've had the PC version for years. It's actually sitting here on shelf right now. I hate it, I could barely control it (though, hopefully, this new Sidewinder will help). Rogue Squadron and, especially, Rogue Leader are so much better. Cybergoth #11 Posted April 22, 2003 Hi there! Does anyone think that one of the console versions like RS I for the Sega CD or RS II for the Playstation has been significantly improved over the PC versions? At least the controls should be better, or? Greetings, Manuel
Flojomojo #12 Posted April 23, 2003 Does anyone think that one of the console versions like RS I for the Sega CD or RS II for the Playstation has been significantly improved over the PC versions? At least the controls should be better, or?The digital console controls aren't as precise as the analog controls of the original PC and Mac computer versions. The Sega CD version of Rebel Assault is quite a bit crappier than the original, omits a whole stage, and has noticable screen tearing. The 3DO version from what I've seen is on par with the PC version. The Factor 5 Playstation remix of Rebel Assault II is a treat for the ears and eyes --the video is broadcast quality and the audio is redone in what I believe was Dolby Surround, which was rare for games at the time. The controls are still digital, but you get the option of using a lightgun for the "sniper" levels. The extra "blooper" films aren't present in the PSX version though. Flojomojo #14 Posted April 23, 2003 Rogue Squadron III kinda looks like it could also be Rebel Assault III http://www.gonegold.com/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi...c;f=12;t=006145

Oh really, what am I missing on that game? I didn't even know that. Yeah, I heard the PC version was a bit better than the Sega CD version, but from what I've also heard--especially from the mostly displeased tone on this thread --that's not exactly saying a whole lot. You're "missing" a whole level of tunnel-running and probe-droid-shooting on ice planet Hoth. You're not missing much, but add that to the lower resolution graphics and dodgy digital control, and you've got a markedly inferior version on the Sega CD. Just like with Dragon's Lair.
