Keyboard instead of joystick

Just downloaded my first game emulator (WinVICE) in order to play one of my favorite childhood games (Jumpman).

I have the emulator and game up and running on my new model Dell laptop but I don't have a joystick. I'm dying to reminisce and don't have immediate access to a joystick. Can anyone give me specific instructions on switching the game from strict joystick mode to a keyboard mode?

You don't need to change the input mode on the game, VICE has keyboard-to-joystick options; go to the "Settings" pulldown menu, select "Joystick settings" and you can select from numpad and right control or two user-defineable keysets for either stick.
