who would buy 5200 paddles?

Recommended Posts

We are just about to release Tile Smashers. It has 2 modes for the controller, Left/Right Movement, and Joystick Position. Joystick Position looks at how far left or right the joystick is pressed to position the paddle, so paddle controllers may work with this mode. Press * or # when the game title screen is on. At development time, no one had paddles available, so this is something people will need to try and let us know what happens.

All a 5200 "paddle" is, is a paddle pot hooked up to the same connections as the original joystick L&R pot was. Any L-R only games play just fine for the most part. I'd be happy to test something, if sent to me.

I remember buying a couple off a guy on eBay, can't remember the price but I'm sure they were less than $40 a piece (less if you had your own joysticks and sent them in to be modded).  I think he used 2600 paddle knobs, the controllers look like official Atari products.  They are well worth the price regardless for the paddle games like Super Breakout and Kaboom!, joysticks aren't nearly as good.  Like the difference between paying a dedicated Major Havoc with the roller controller vs. a Tempest conversion Major Havoc with the spinner.

I would like to get a paddle to use for my 5200 .

Count me in, and perhaps, have one built with a pot (endless) from the driving controller so I (we) can use that specific one for Tempest, an AWESOME alternative for the joystick or even the Trak-Ball (I own 2 CX53 Trak-Balls and neither of them work properly).

i was just wondering how many people would be interested in buying 5200 paddles if i made some. how much would you be willing to pay?

I know its been 16 and half years since you asked this question, and just about 15 years since you last logged on, but people have recently decided to respond to your thread. So if you could, please come back to us and sell us your paddles. We all look forward to your favorable response.

Thanks.

Pole Position, Tempest, Space Invaders, Galaxian, Super Breakout, Castle Crisis, Kaboom, and others would work well with a 5200 Paddle. Maybe even Gyruss.

Gyruss would be a no go with a paddle. Gyruss requires all directions to move around the screen. It is one of the games I use for testing calibrated controllers since if the pots aren't quite where they need to be, the ship won't rotate all the way around properly.

I have 2 of these. $40 each. Extra button on the other side is start. One has a red button (pictured) the second one could have a black or yellow button. A couple chips in the right and left corners on the bottom plastic of the paddle shell. Last guy was selling them for $65 so I figure with a couple little cosmetic flaws on these $40 should be a good price (??) Jitter free of course and in full working order using original Atari brand controller cord.
