fultonbot #1 Posted May 4, 2016 I just started SNES "Breath Of Fire" on the WiiU virtual console. It's the perfect RPG that I've been looking for! (I believe) -Old school JRPG -Obvious way to save your game -Obvious early choices for advancement -Grindy-level goodness -Short, understandable prologue story (find all the keys!) It feels like a Final Fantasy 1 or Phantasy Star 1. I love the simple template of those early games. I'm hoping Breath Of Fire stays true to that format and doesn't get all weird on me all-of-a-sudden.
jhd #2 Posted May 4, 2016 I played Breath of Fire 3 on the PlayStation. I got stuck at a point where there is an action sequence that requires very precise timing. It is necessary to get past that point to progress in the game. This was very frustrating! I play RPGs primarily because I do not like action games. fultonbot #3 Posted May 5, 2016 I played Breath of Fire 3 on the PlayStation. I got stuck at a point where there is an action sequence that requires very precise timing. It is necessary to get past that point to progress in the game. This was very frustrating! I play RPGs primarily because I do not like action games. Hopefully #1 doesn't have that. I stopped playing Final Fantasy V becasue it required me to have some EXACT class for one of my characters, and I thought "that makes no sense" I recently got Xenoblade for the 3DS and it's too action oriented for me. I want my RPGs turn-based thank-you-very-much.
Eltigro #4 Posted May 5, 2016 I played Breath of Fire 3 on the PlayStation. I got stuck at a point where there is an action sequence that requires very precise timing. It is necessary to get past that point to progress in the game. This was very frustrating! I play RPGs primarily because I do not like action games. Only one I've played is 3. And started it up again recently. How far into the game is this action sequence? I've never beaten it, but I know I've gotten at least a little past the lighthouse part back in the day. My current play of it I am at the light house. (That big eyeball on a lizard thing wiped my party and I haven't picked it back up in a little while. Working on Tomb Raider for the Saturn... yeah... the Saturn... lol)
jhd #5 Posted May 5, 2016 How far into the game is this action sequence? Honestly, I do not remember much about the plot; it has been many years since I played it. The sequence involved chasing an NPC around town; presumably to question him. He was just a little bit faster than you, making him impossible to catch. There was probably some trick to it that I did not discover.
TPA5 #6 Posted May 5, 2016 I remember playing Breath of Fire quite a few years ago, it was enjoyable but the grinding ended up, well, grinding on me.
Cybergoth #7 Posted January 9, 2017 I love the simple template of those early games. I'm hoping Breath Of Fire stays true to that format and doesn't get all weird on me all-of-a-sudden. You've probably noticed by now that it basically stays like that until the final dungeon. There it will freak out a bit, as the entire dungeon will start spinning around at certain crossings
Black_Tiger #8 Posted January 9, 2017 I love the idea of the original Breath of Fire and the execution tuned put well enough, but the last few times I played through I stopped at the last dungeon because it stopped being fun and jyst felt tedious. The aesthetics felt like a CPS1 game ported to SNES. I bought Brrath of Fire II as soon as it came out and played it to death. I found every little secret and mapped out all of the character combinations and tried every variation of town. I always wabted battle backgrounds which reacted to the action, in particular the forest catching fire. It was shocking how well they pulled it off. I got part way through Breath of Fire 3 when it came out and quit when I couldn't take any more. It wasn't BoF and it wasn't enjoyable.
zylon #9 Posted January 10, 2017 Hmmm. I never got into those as I was busy with the Lufia series then. Might have to revisit those.
