People destroying old hardware

Recommended Posts

I stumbled across this on ebay, someone is hacking up NES Advantage controllers to make lamps. Things like this just make me angry. I know Nintendo made millions of zappers and Advantage controllers and people are free to do what they want with their own stuff, but to needlessly destroy them to make something stupid like this just bugs me. :(

I dunno....I don't think that's all that stupid. Looks like they actually did a pretty nice job. Though the shade doesn't match IMO!

And like you say, it's their stuff after all.

Those are pretty neat actually! lol

The phaser and joysticks are worth less than the sum of the lamp I bet, especially if there was truly something wrong with them. Doubtful with the joysticks I guess, but some have even done this sort of thing to Atari consoles/shells that either don't work or are common as dirt.

Yeah I was thinking about that Cebus Capucinno guy that used to make those lamps. Did he died?

True, it just makes me cringe to see old gaming stuff ruined. They are kind of neat but to me they seem really tacky; to each their own. :)

No, he didn't die... just no longer participates in the forums for whatever reason(s). Not sure why. Probably just grew up and left us all behind.

Well if I find myself a job that keeps me busy during the day I'm going to leave too. But don't get your hopes up folks. As it is now I'll be on these forums for another 23 years and 9 months.

What do you plan on happening in 23 years and 9 months? :ponder:

Yeah, I understand. It can be annoying, but I suppose it's better than just throwing stuff into the rubbish heap.

As for me, I like to take old stuff that doesn't work and then make mods to make them work again. No longer original (and obviously so - I'm not out to trick people), but they are moved from the pile of swell, original stuff that used to work to swell, but modified, stuff that does work. But I prefer to keep it original and working if possible.

Retirement if I'm still alive. And I'll be damned at 70 years old that I'm going to keep on AtariAge for 8 hours a day like I am now.

Eh, it's not as if he's drawing a smiley face on the Mona Lisa or turning boxed copies of River Raid into bookends. This kind of thing only bugs me if it's a super-rare item, and even then it is their item, they can do what they want with it.

I thought this would be applauded by many here. I've learned lately that owning and playing real hardware is for collectors only and that real gamers go digital, shedding the materialistic selfishness of physical ownership of games. Therefore, destruction or mangling of capitalist goods like that lamp should be promoted!

I have tons of those advantage sticks and they are not anything. Sure you can get $15-$20 for them but when shipping cost you the majority of that and then add in fees they are basically not worth selling. When it is all said and done they are only worth like $5 and lets get real..... nobody uses those things. I have 3 boxed and probably and easy 8 out of the box just sitting in a bin collecting dust.

Same thing with zappers I have boxes of them way more than systems I need to sell. It doesn't bother me at all. Odds are they had sticky buttons anyhow and who is going to put the time into fixing a controller nobody wants to use anyhow.

I don't disagree on the worth, you're right on, but I dunno iceman...I used mine until very recently. If a game requires turbos (IMO of course) and felt good with a stick (say shooters like Gun.Smoke) the Advantage was my go to.

I'll admit my Zapper only gets busted out for hahas tho.

It's better than sitting in a closet, unused and crying that they have been abandoned by their owner. Now they have a proud place out in the open for all to see. I'm sure they are quite happy. :)

It pisses us off when we see somebody (usually prepubescent kids) using a sledgehammer on a working heavy sixer just to get views.

I'm generally OK with it if the stuff doesn't work or is so dirt common that nobody'll miss it. I've got a garage full of broken systems that may end up as an art project someday.

I'd prefer to see that stuff used for repairs, mods, or used for actual game playing. They're not my style, but to each their own. It's not like the world will miss couple of Zappers or Advantage joysticks.
