lonesome_pa #1 Posted April 26, 2003 I bought a small item from eBay and the seller took one of the Priority Mail envelopes, turned it inside out and mailed it First Class mail. The shipping (stated in the auctions) was $3.00 and the actual shipping turned out to be $0.96. I know that since the auction clearly stated the shipping, there's nothing I can do, I'm SOL on that one. But isn't using Priority Mail supplies for anything other than shipping Priority Mail illegal???? After odering Priority Mail supplies, I eceived a letter in the mail stating that I couldn't use these for any reason other than for Priority Mail shipping. I was "required" to sign it and send it back. I don't really want to report it, but should I?? If so, how?? I know if I don't some buyer down the line just might. Not sure how to handle this one. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Mock #2 Posted April 26, 2003 Did you contact the seller about it and if so what did they say? I hate that myself...nothing worse than paying $4 for priority mail + $2 insurance and getting an envelope for .90 cents...burns me up. The postal people probably have bigger problems, but you never know i guess...I'd let the guy know he sucks for doing that though... Mock
mert #3 Posted April 26, 2003 I order Priority Mail supplies myself. Now I could be wrong but I believe that the letter they ask you to sign is to agree that you wont use their supplies to ship stuff thru UPS,FedEx,etc..
sku_u #4 Posted April 26, 2003 I've noticed that the newer boxes when turned inside out all say USPS all over them, so I'm guessing the USPS is trying to crack down on that sort of thing. I don't think they mind if you use them to send items through the USPS, but I could be wrong. Maybe someone who ships mainly Priority Mail could answer that question. holygrailvideogames.com #5 Posted April 26, 2003 I had somebody do the same thing to me. When it arrived someone from the post office wrote on the package that postage was due because it was a priority box. My mailman still delivered it even though it said postage due. Christophero Sly #6 Posted April 26, 2003 Maybe he was just recycling a priority envelope that he received from someone else. I turn all the priority boxes I receive inside out and reuse them. I never thought about doing that with the envelopes, but it sounds like a good idea.
svenski #8 Posted April 26, 2003 I've heard that if the shipper uses priority mail packaging and turns it inside out etc, then if USPS find out they will levy unpaid shipping charges on the package. If you are the recipient, they won't let you have it until you pay the charges (presumably difference between 1st class and priority mail).

After it has previously been used to legitimately ship something priority to me, am I just supposed to throw the box away? What a waste...
Bratwurst #10 Posted April 26, 2003 I've shipped tons of stuff through the USPS using inverted Priority packaging. Every postal worker I've spoken with about this states they don't mind provided it's using their service exclusively. Mind you, I'm pretty sure certain Post Masters could be more strict in their areas.. but I've yet to have a problem.

The reason why they make you sign that piece of paper is so you swear that you won't use the boxes for shipping via UPS or another competitive carrier. badbrad #12 Posted April 26, 2003 I got denied on a priority box inside out once when I shipped something to japan. the lady said you can't turn the boxes inside out. she was a real bitch about it, too so i wrapped it in brown mailing paper and took it back the next day. the other day I got one that was taped with priority mail tape. the usps logos were scribbled out with a marker and it was shipped media mail. sku_u #13 Posted April 27, 2003 Tkae a brown paper bag apart and use it to wrap the box. Then they can't say a damn thing either way.
