I heard that the "handshake" was a little different for Atari employees back in the early 1980s:

 

1. Clasp hands as in a regular handshake.

 

2. Lift the thumb of your boss.

 

3. Place your mouth on his thumb.

 

4. Gently move your head up and down.

 

5. Try not to cry by remembering that Atari gives you free recreational drugs.

My guess is that since it claims the source is from the female vice president then during one of their company stoner parties(average work day) she probably made it up as a joke because she thought it would look funny for a bunch of dudes to shake hands like that and it just stayed "official" because everyone was too stoned to get the joke.
