Help fitting OS & Stereo boards in my 1200XL

Recommended Posts

I have a 1200XL with an AtariMax 32-in-1 OS board and a stereo Pokey board. To date I have gotten around the overlap (and fitting under the keyboard) with having either the OS board or Stereo board, one, placed to the rear and attached with ribbon cable to the original socket. This has been problematic at times and I want a better solution. I was going to just do the dirty piggy-back Pokey stereo mod and use the stereo board in another computer. But then I stumbled across mention of a suggestion by FlashjazzCat to use the second OS socket for a U1MB to fit a stereo board next to it. And I was wondering if this would work with a 32-in-1 OS board as well? I would apparently lose internal BASIC, unless I can some how fit that to the first OS socket, but either way I wouldn't mind, if I can get both boards properly installed in the sockets.

FJC? Any thoughts?

It should just work once you have the right socket fitted to the rear slot and the correct jumper arrangement. My 1200XL is "OS slot agnostic" in as much as both OS ROM slots are identical (I have U1MB plugged into the rear socket) and only jumper W11 is in place, but I can't recall off-hand if this jumper arrangement works without U1MB.

So currently you have nothing in the front rom socket/slot then, and the U1MB in the rear slot using only jumper W11, all other jumpers are open? If so, I think I will give it a shot. I really don't need internal BASIC, and was going to replace it with a game rom at some point anyway. If I want a BASIC, the BXE cart or Turbo are fine for me.

The AtariMax OS has a hold [option] BASIC enable though, so I may be holding [option] to boot the OS!

Exactly: nothing in the front slot and all jumpers aside from W11 open. Honestly, I saw all kinds of jumper arrangements used with U1MB and maybe some work without Ultimate too. If you hit problems, just check out some of the U1MB threads and look for 1200XL pics. I can't remember if mine works with U1MB removed and an XL MMU put back in.
