NES Zapper Doesn't Miss?

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a backup light gun for my Nintendo and I noticed on Duck Hunt that I was getting far in the game and hadn't missed yet (I'm decent but not that great).

So I tried to deliberately miss and hits still registered,

I've tried both on a newer CRT and a Trinitron from the 80s with the same results.

What would be causing this and how can I fix it?

The Zapper use a light sensor to work. When you fire, it display a black image with squares for the ducks. The game compare what the photosensor received and if the white square it centered on it.

It's possible that previous owners pointer the Zapper on a 100 watts lightbulb to cheat, and that this excessive light damaged the sensor and that now it doesn't make the difference between different levels of light.

If the zapper register hits to everywhere you point it, except if you block any light from getting to the sensor, then the light sensor had been damaged. If it register even in the dark, it was probably modified, maybe shorted.

If it was modified, then it might be possible to undo the mod. If the light sensor is busted, you have to find the same part and replace it.

I have 2 zapper 1 grey and 1 orange. Don't destroy or open the zapper I will trade you. As long as its usa only. No canada too expensive. That is so cool. I can use that as a cheat and see what happens on the last level of duck hunt.

This was my first thought- sell it as a 'Super Rarez Hacked Zapper' for something like that. :P
