Upcoming Jaguar Game Drive Cartridge

A barebones SD cart is probably what the majority wants. Networking would be neat, but the fact is Jag systems are expensive these days. I don't know about you guys, but I'm sure as hell not going to go out of my way to buy a second just to play DOOM. :)

I'd have to agree here. The networking side probably isn't worth the work required to get it going. Similar for the developer options - most everyone doing anything on the Jaguar has a skunkboard - and once these SD carts hit, I bet there'll be a lot of skunkboards on ebay, as people who bought them to play ROMs will not need them anymore.

It's all fine and dandy but I'd stick to a barebone design first.

I've witnessed 2 projects so far for the Amiga CD32 that have been "in the works" for years because they kept on adding stuff (or just plain started too ambitious) and there's still no end in sight with the exception of the occasional "almost there", "here this are the schematics I'm working with" etc...

An SD card only version of the board (a la Everdrive) even without dev (USB) support and even without ISO streaming support would be already a huge step ahead for the Jag scene and likely keep the costs under control (and I mean so we can finally all enjoy the complete library for £100 or so).

But you already know all that so chop chop chop, time to work :)

I have a proven track record of getting stuff completed and shipped now with the Lynx cart. It may have taken bloody ages, but that was about 90% down to poor health! I seem to be faring up reasonably well at the moment. So I'm hoping for quicker progress... ;) The difference between having a working prototype and getting it to market is pretty large, so I completely understand why a lot of projects just vanish.

But, yes, the idea is to ship with basic functionality. However if the time is taken at this state to consider all potential possible features, I can plan ahead with the hardware and make sure all the needed lines from the cart port are brought out to the main controller chip, etc...

The hardware can be reconfigured from the Jag, so as long as I am careful, the hardware functionality can be increased after launch.

If I understand SD card right, you can put several ROMs on it and run it on a Jaguar. If so, would a SD card threat future cartridge releases in any sense? What do you think?

Although in the past certain members of the Jaguar community have fought to the death against the very idea, the reality is practically every other computer, videogame, and handheld platform in history has had a solution like this made for it, and those do just fine in terms of new homebrew releases. As such, there's no reason to treat the Jaguar any differently.

Ask yourself the question: Would you buy a physical cartridge if you had a way to play the game from a memory card?

If you collect game cartridges, then a cartridge image on a memory card is worthless I would have thought?

Ultimately its down to the individual, but I don't see it would stop people doing cart releases. People do these things because they want to, and people buy them because they want them. I don't think that dynamic will change.

Can we have an artists rendition of what the cartridge is going to look like?! ;)

More seriously, I'm not sure. It will more than likely be a custom case, and quite possibly 3D printed again... with the Jag I dont think the numbers are there to justify injection molding.

I would love for people to have "digital releases" at a price cut rate, so I can run it on an SD card based cart and still contribute to the author.

From what you guys wrote I see it as it wouldn't kill the games coming on physical media, but maybe damage it to some little extent.

I can understand it's the way of things, the next step, but I just can't shake the feeling off that an era of sd cards somewhat will concervate the experince but at the same time give the back catalogue away to much more people for much less.

I can say from my Atari 8bit perspective I've purchased probably 10 or 15 homebrew games in the last 3 years and I have every possible iteration of SD/CF/Digital cart or device. So I would say that no, Homebrews will be exactly the same as before.

Do you know how many hombrews are still created for the 2600, Intv, Coleco, etc? The SD carts have been around a long time for these systems. Some of the time the roms are only available in cartridge form and not released otherwise. Jaguar fans always have a heart attack anytime a SD cart is mentioned.. I just don't get it.

Not in the slightest. Collectors collect thing because of their particular obsessive tilt of preserving the past or simply owning a complete collection. I make stuff because of my own odd obsessions.

Some people just want to be able to play the old games they have fond memories of, or experience the things they never had. These are more the type of people which would buy a flash cart.

To be honest, this could give homebrew a platform. It wouldnt take much effort to effectively set up a Jag homebrew distribution service from which people could buy homebrew and then directly play on their Jag via the ethernet connection. Basically a Jag app store, which I mentioned before.

Given the size of the Jag userbase I have no idea of the likelyhood of any of this, but it defies the "It'll kill hombrew man!" type mindset.

Oh, and I just noticed this phrase: "give the back catalogue away to much more people for much less". Too right. Playing old games is not an elitist hobby. Some view collecting this way, which is up to them, but I dont see why people think you must pay inflated prices just to play old games. Its daft.

Yeah homebrewes could just sell it though an app store, but what I fear is that the physical media is hurt buy it, on cartridges or CDs alike. But ofc the idea for me to play Battlesphere or even link it has struck me.... along with mindset: more stuff to more people.

I play the games I own, so I'm no collector with multiple carts in unbroken boxes or such. If Songbird is on this train -- also being a seller of physical media -- I guess it's ok. (To me a new game would have been the greatest thing for "mystic project 3"; this new software is more like building a new highway when guys like me prefer a new car rather than an new road. But that's just me.)

When it comes to elitism, in a way I view both Neo Geo AES and Jaguar to be more towards that, due to those low commercial successes.
