NE146 #1 Posted April 29, 2003 Hmmm... looks like everyone's favorite emulator is now on xbox. Has supercharger support and the missing soundchannel (which we all noticed on the stella xbox emu) is now emulated. http://homebrew.dcemulation.com/xboxevo/z26emu.shtml coooool
Video #2 Posted April 29, 2003 Hell yeah. As I don't have a computer, An emulator that'll run on my X-Box will be awesome. Just gotta burn this crap all to CDRW now.
Albert #3 Posted April 29, 2003 That's awesome, glad to see 2600 emulation for the Xbox, even though I don't own one. I need to post some news about this. Thanks for the heads up, NE146! ..Al

Watch out, since a good port of Stella for the XBox has been available for quite some time! (so this is not the first 2600 XBox emulator) Thanks for pointing that out, at least now I won't (further) put my foot in my mouth if I post some news about this. I don't generally keep up on the Xbox emulation scene since I don't have one.. ..Al
NE146 #6 Posted April 29, 2003 I did mention the Stella emu in my post (albeit somewhat indirectly). One thing about the stella emu is that although it seems to run perfectly, occasionally it's missing some sounds. Like for example, the 'scared' ghost sound in Mspac I haven't tried Z26 yet, but if it's as good as the pc version, this will be great

Can I use the fact that it's very late as an excuse? Please let us know your opinion of Z26 on the Xbox once you've had a chance to try it out! ..Al
Shannon #8 Posted April 29, 2003 hehe... I'd love to use emulation on my x-box. Problem is it isn't chipped.
NE146 #9 Posted April 30, 2003 Please let us know your opinion of Z26 on the Xbox once you've had a chance to try it out! ..Al You got it! Well I checked it out today and after figuring out the tweak to adjust the screen size (you press the left stick thumb button) it was off an running! It's very impressive and runs Pitfall II quite well along with Supercharger games. The sound is pretty much spot on. I did notice some very *slight* discrepencies in some games like Space Invaders (a little more rough sounding) but it was very slight and only someone who is intimately familiar with the sound of the game will notice a difference. Still though it's very very passable and about 98% close enough. Other games such as MsPacman sound perfect. (No more missing sounds) I managed to take some screenshots of it in action. I guess I could hook up the 2600 to the same tv and do a side by side comparison but at a quick glance, it looks just right. The speed of the emu is good as well. I really can't see too much that could be improved except maybe the addition of save states? Overall it's a great alternative to PC emus since this resides right in the xbox console hardrive and can be played on any tv you want in a jiffy. Personally, playing 2600 games on a computer monitor while sitting at a desk just doesn't 'feel' right. So this is one step closer to the real thing in my book. Anyway.. that's about it
djdsl #10 Posted April 30, 2003 WOW thats so sweet. was it difficult to set up the emulator? or do you just burn the program to cdr with all the roms in a particular folder?
NE146 #11 Posted April 30, 2003 WOW thats so sweet. was it difficult to set up the emulator? or do you just burn the program to cdr with all the roms in a particular folder? You just unzip the file, then FTP it over to the Xbox HD along with your roms and that's it
djdsl #12 Posted April 30, 2003 You just unzip the file, then FTP it over to the Xbox HD along with your roms and that's it nice. i've been considering getting an xbox, news about Mame and now Z26 have finally pushed me over the edge. So once you've got all the files on the X, can you save all that info ?

I suggest a Dreamcast, the CDs are easy to make, and there are plenty of emulators on there, and as a benefit you can buy cool games for it for real cheap! Wiffer #15 Posted May 1, 2003 NE146, I have a couple of questions I would like to ask you. 1. Do you have to mod your Xbox to be able to run the emulator and if so, then what mod chip do you use and / or suggest? 2. Do you suggest any FTP program, or do you have one that is best suited to use with transfering programs to the Xbox? 3. Where can I download the emulator? I see that it looks like it is on a IRC channel, but I hardly ever mess with IRC and would like to be able to download from a web site, if possible. 4. One more question, concerning if you have to mod the Xbox. What site has the best information concerning doing this mod to the Xbox, any insite or information you have concerning this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, David
NE146 #16 Posted May 1, 2003 Due to the extensive nature of the subject, I aint about to go into detail here.. just go to www.xbox-scene.com and read the forums, check the tutorials. It's all there.
Velvis #17 Posted May 1, 2003 Can someone whose downloaded the Z26 emulator let me know where to get it. I am well versed in tracking down xbox emulators via IRC, but have been unable to locate Z26. Also I HIGHLY recommend the XBOX over the Dreamcast for emulation. For a number of reasons: FTP ability (no need to burn discs), speed & quality of emulation, Xbox media player (allows you to play/stream music, photos, & video to your Xbox. The Xbox is supposedly going to be $150 starting this month. Xbox also plays DVDs I cant say enough good things about the Xbox emulation/homebrew scene. The off the shelf software leaves something to be desired (for me atleast), but the emulation and built in harddrive/ethernet make it a great machine. I recommend the Matrix no solder mod chip, it was very easy to install.

Velvis #19 Posted May 1, 2003 Also to reply to someone above. You generally have to use IRC due to the fact that the Xbox SDK is copyrighted and thus anything created with it cant be hosted on a normal website....

NE146 #21 Posted May 1, 2003 Also I HIGHLY recommend the XBOX over the Dreamcast for emulation. The Dreamcast is still better for Atari 5200/8Bit emulation however (at least for now)

Godzilla #23 Posted May 1, 2003 let us not forget that a dreamcast is in the $20+ range for the system! and it emulates out of the box. The xbox is quite a lot more money, and then needs more money and disassembly on top of that. When looking at the big picture, the dreamcast rules over xbox for emuin imho :-) i hope someone ports z26 to it... kinda ironic that it can do the much more complicated a800/5200 perfectly, but not the 2600 yet. Id love to see nostalgia on the dreamcast too :-)
PuddWakkr #24 Posted May 1, 2003 LOVE the Z26 on the xbox. Just got thru playing around with it. If I had a set of paddles to hook up to my xbox I'd sit in front of my TV playing KABOOM! all day and never leave the house ( analog thumsticks just screw me up )
