robbievgb
Been speaking with someone who has a few original shipping boxes of New old stock 5200 controllers up for sale. He is selling a box (4 Controllers per box) for $100 per box, or single controllers for $40 a piece. Question is, I've already committed to buying one box, is this a good enough deal to warrant getting at least one more?

robbievgb
Well I ended up only getting one box. I've opened one controller so far to play around with. The boxes are dated 1987 so I am not sure if it's the last revision Atari made, but the analog stick is the best I've used so far. The buttons work, but are quite squishy (nothing a best kit can't remedy). I was surprised that even games like Pac Man and Popeye played pretty well. Pole Position was awesome, pulled off some pretty tight passes. Edited June 29, 2016 by robbievgb
+lawdawg710
Does the seller have more? Id be interested in getting a box
jaybird3rd
I'd say you got a good deal! The joysticks are in mint condition, so even if they require some maintenance, you'll still have some good-looking sticks that should last you a long time. The Best Electronics rebuild remedies most (if not all) of the most serious mechanical problems with the CX-52; I bought the first of my Best-refurbished sticks over two years ago, and it still works great. robbievgb
Does the seller have more? Id be interested in getting a boxI'm not sure. He's a local guy who I guess is a power seller on eBay, but he is in the process of moving right now so he's trying to clear some stuff out in a hurry. I'm actually heading out of town tomorrow for the holiday weekend, but I can see if he still has any when I get back next week. Oh also I didn't mean to post the same pic twice like an idiot. This was supposed to be the fourth one. Edited June 30, 2016 by robbievgb
Amityville315
That is a good deal. I'd take a box as well!

Ballblaɀer
Best Electronics reports that even new old stock (i.e. new in box) 5200 joysticks have a high failure rate. I'd guess something in the flex circuit degrades over time -- even with non-use -- but it's just a guess.

Seemed like the analog joystick on the new one worked better than my second hand cx-52. I'm wondering if maybe the pots on the old one need some cleaning? robbievgb
Well all the buttons on the one I've tested work and I had figured I'd be buying refurb kits from Best Electronics from the ones I keep anyway. I took a look inside and saw that the one I opened had the Rev 9 flex circuits. The date on the boxes is 1987. CZroe
I'd love to get 4... or more. Definitely let us know if he's still offering!
BassGuitari
Interesting that they're from 1987. Can't have been too many people still playing Atari 5200 in 1987.

Bruce Tomlin
Oxidation. This. The only used controllers I ever found that still worked, I opened up. They were rev 8 (I've seen up to rev 9) but they had one important difference. The contacts had black (graphite?) stuff on them like modern TV remotes (or at least the ones that don't have gold-plated contacts). This is really easy to check for, just pop the bezel from the start button row and look at the flex circuits. The question I have always wondered is how easy would it be for a regular person to do that kind of coating on contacts?
peedenmark7
I'd be interested in a box as well.. robbievgb
Hey everyone I'm trying to get in touch with the guy again but he hasn't been very responsive. He was selling a box of four for $100. So the total cost to anyone wanting me to get them a box would be a little more since I'd have to ship them. I don't want to pick these up and then be on the hook for them if the price is not as desirable w/ shipping, so I will weigh my box this evening and PM anyone who's expressed interest in a box. I'll go by the order people have replied on this thread. Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk
robbievgb
Still trying to get a hold of this guy. For what it's worth, the box of four controllers weighs about 2.5 lbs. Every time I try to network or make friends with local sellers or collectors they drop off the map! I was bummed when I found out they were no longer making it. I called toysrus in 1990 and they said 5 years ago they stopped selling the 5200.
robbievgb
I'm still in for 4. BTW: Is this seller in the San Fran area ? No he is in the Phoenix area. I've seen him repost on Craigslist and Letgo but I still have not got any response. I'll try a few more times. Hopefully he's not an AA member because he might jack up the price after seeing this thread.
robbievgb
Update: He's "checking his warehouse" for any more. Might have just wanted me to stop bugging him, but we will see. Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk
