Variants with Keyboard Component Blank Tapes

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd share some photos of Keyboard Component of BASIC Data Storage Cassettes.

The variation comes in with the black and blue tape; it was purchased a while ago and separately from the box and white tape.

Also, note that the box has room for two tapes and their plastic cases. This purchase only included 1 tape; the other tape likely had been used back in the day. I can confirm with certainty that this box does not come with a manual (do blank tapes really need one?). The box was mostly sealed except that the previous owner had open the top of the box instead of removing the seal completely to open the box like a book. The way the cover is designed, it would have been impossible to remove any manual tucked into the cover's slot (opening is near the hinge). Since the seal was already broken, I didn't mind removing the remaining plastic seal.

Awesome looking box, I love that blue. Great pick up.

Agreed! The Blue colour somehow makes it look more "techie," since the White one looks like any ordinary music cassette.

Those are some mighty fine box scans you have there. Very detailed and thoroughly presented. That cold be... useful ;-)

If you are curious about the construction, I'll add a little more.

The cardboard does feel thinner than the Mattel gatefold game boxes, game boxes with the plastic tray and without the tray. Perhaps Mattel expected adults to use these boxes more often while kids were expected to use (and abuse) the game boxes.

There are 4 cardboard flaps that create recess for 2 tape cases. The tape in the 2nd photo is resting on the left and right flaps and is hiding the top flap. The left and right flaps are glued to the back but the top and bottom flaps are not. Because the top flap is not glued, this is how the previous owner was able to remove the tapes by opening the top of the box instead of the front. If you are thinking of a new box design, I'd recommend gluing all the flaps instead of just 2.

Yeah, I was strolling along on eBay when this item said "Hey sailor, you got the money, I got the time."

Lol! I'd say the Playcable units variants rank up there too. ;)

Do any of these cassettes have an insert for the plastic case that shows when looking at the spine (like a normal music cassette)? I know it's a long shot, but I occasionally look in the cassette section of thrift stores in the hopes of finding one of these. It would be easier if I knew what I was looking for :D

Unfortunately I cannot make gatefold boxes. But I could do an accurate reproduction in the INTV style. The retention for the cassettes would be the only tough part. Would have to invent something new altogether.

This is a pic from Alex's collection. Maybe there was a manual? Also, is the extra space in the box for the other Basic cart thing he has pictured?

Edit: Oops, just realized they are different products. Still cool.

Yep, that's the big box one with the Basic cart. That I do have, the other one I need.

There is no paper insert. The only thing you see is the bottom of the cassette, where the tape is exposed.
