Action 54 for the Virtual Boy

Recommended Posts

I don't think I've made a thread related to this, but I'm making a collection of minigames for the Virtual Boy called "Action 54." Like Action 52. I was originally going to call it Action 53, but some homebrew NES game already has that title, so I made it Action 54. There won't be 54 different minigames, I don't think I could come up with that many. Right now I'm trying to finish up work on the first mini-game called "Candyman," in which you control a mouth opening and closing. Opening for the licorice, and closing for the cherries. I was having a bit of trouble with the randomness of it seeing as how the Virtual Boy has no random number generator. I am wondering if the randomness is random enough here. This is the latest version: http://www.atari2600land.com/action54/action54of20160706v4.zip

Once this ends, I will resume work on the second game called "Cartful Dodger" in which you control a frenzied shopper determined to get past everyone who has stopped to look at stuff.

Worked on Cartful Dodger today. It took about two dozen tries to get the shopper to be just right. I kept finding mistakes I've made in the picture. The moving shopper is the uppermost one, and there's 4 frames of animation. The shopper to avoid is facing the wrong way. There's still much to do including adding control to the shopper, collision detection for the stopped shopper, and random y positions (3 different ones) for the stopped shopper to be introduced from the right. The background scrolls as well, but it's Hanna-Barbera-like repetitive scrolling, but I can change the speed of it.

I have discovered that the more I add to a game, the slower it goes. Therefore, the fastest speed available to me is pretty good. But I want the game to increase in speed. Would it be an interesting enough game if it was just the same speed all the time, or should I attempt to make it go even faster as the game continues? The game right now is like Street Racer for the Atari 2600 only Cartful Dodger automatically scrolls.

Began work on a new mini game called "Supper Mario." I tweaked the colors from the blog picture to make it look better.

Back working on this game again. Unfortunately, Cranberry Capers doesn't look any different. That's because I spent a large amount of time trying to get the getting stuck in the wall bug out. I think I have done it, so I will work on the actual gameplay next.

I gave up on Cranberry Capers because I couldn't get the wall detection right, so I decided to go for a version of Zyx. It's not very far along, though.
