I got the Toys R Us Email of doom as well :( Guess I should have ordered one direct from Atgames before they ran out of stock. At least I have the loaner to continue testing roms on from Pipercub :)

Bill, do you know if the flashback portable is still on track to release 11/29?

Was there a reason given for the change of the game lineup? Licenses expired? Surely not because of lack of space!

Also, is it possible that these early versions of the Atari Flashback Portable in the field are sort of tester units for the fans (us) and AtGames is seeing what our responses are; i.e., not happy with compatibility issues, and they are making corrections to the portable and thereby delaying the release further to make a better product? (Wishful thinking for this year; maybe next year. Plus, I would like to see a sturdy combined joystick-paddle instead of a d-pad.)

Why else have a shortage right before the holiday shopping season? Maybe Atari found out about the SD slot and got upset and halted production?

Conspiracy theories and I should make a tinfoil hat to wear!

Plus, no mention by Bill of the "other" product that was supposed to be released in November, or did I miss that...

Space Invaders and Jungle Hunt were both Taito properties so I'm thinking a deal fell through with them and Atgames.

Shame too, really good games. The newer version of Space Invaders is fairly spot on.

AtGames trying to save money, so letting go of Taito properties to get Frogger makes business sense but of course it's nonsense to fans.

Liked what you said which was why I wrote the Taito comment.

As for the SD slot, I seriously doubt the product could go through all the development, programming, marketing, and Atari and other companies not hearing about it wayyyy before release I find unlikely.

The "other" product I think Bill is talking about is the Flashback Portable with the modified game list (without Space Invaders and Jungle Hunt or the Taito titles).

I'd go with that decision. Frogger on this system is quite good.

If I hear otherwise I'll let you know, but it looks like everything is still on track.

It's easy enough to put the Taito games on an SD card yourself. The only one you won't have is the new port of Space Invaders.

There is no issue with Atari or any other licensee. It was a simple manufacturing delay.

Also, no need to speculate unnecessarily. The other product is still in development (still working on optimizations and bug hunts), so it missed its November window. I can't go into details still, but it's not Atari related, although will influence the overall hardware line-up in 2017.

Ooo... the mystery continues... :) I originally thought it would be Atari arcade games but it's not Atari related...

So here is my question. Frogger and Space Invaders are obviously not 2600 tech. I would be curious on how to make more games for the Flashback Portable that call to it's native hardware.

If such roms calling to the hardware were made would the SD browser be able to pull them up or recognize them, or does it only recognize 2600 roms that run in emulation?

That's probably because the portable will not be out until after Black Friday. November 29th to be exact. Your best bet is to obtain a 20% off coupon from Bed, Bath & Beyond. If they are selling them for $50, you will get it for $40 with the coupon. That's not a bad deal...

Too bad, since Walgreens has the other 2017 AtGames products in their ad for $35.

Would've been a great price for the Atari portable.

Received the TRU rejection email last night. I set mine up for Paypal payment and was curious if others did also. I found with another transaction I did, Paypal has a limit on how long they let an authorization sit there.

I really appreciate this thread. thevnaguy, I did the same thing. Thanks for the heads up. I am purchasing one for myself, and one for a friend. The first one is to review, and the other is for a gift. I just think that brick and mortar stores are just not the way to go anymore for products like this. One click and it is done and on its way...hopefully.

I realized Bill already talked about this. Disregard question. :D

It's the Space Invaders coded for the hardware (same one on the console Flashback), so it's the new port, not the original. There's no readily available ROM for that. It might work in theory if someone were to rip it and run it from the SD card as a bin, but I don't think anyone has sourced it.

So let me get this straight. If I wait and buy one of these portables later on, I won't be getting Space Invaders at all? :???:

Correct, no new Space Invaders port (same as on Atari Flashback 6/7) on the final retail hardware (again, here's the list for that version: http://armchairarcade.com/perspectives/2016/11/13/atari-flashback-portable-2016-official-game-list/). You can run the original Atari 2600 Space Invaders via the SD card on either version.

Ripping it would be pointless, wouldn't it? Because it's not VCS game code. Right? It is native to the SoC used in the console?

Not if it would allow other portable owners to play it on units that it wasn't preinstalled on.
