Nintendo Classic Mini announced

Recommended Posts

I am in the same boat. I had so many HD TVs break down on me that I switched back to CRT TVs a few years ago. I even had a friend offer to buy me a brand new 50" HD television free of charge. I told him no thank you and that I am currently content using the old stuff.

You must have amazingly bad luck. There's no reason why modern TVs should be failing on you, period. Frankly, if you have HD video sources, sticking with old CRT TVs, particularly with the low prices on today's HDTVs, seems an extraordinary measure.

I must have bad luck. I have tried several different brands and they just all end up dead. Maybe some time in the future I will try again but at the moment I am content using my CRT TVs from the 90s. I'm just glad I never got rid of them.

I think it would be a weird move if they incorporate an SD card reader (and opening the thing for piracy), while their business is selling games.

Not if they restricted it somehow and charged 5 dollars a game or rom. A WII has a SD slot and can be hacked to run an emulator so adding an sd slot to this is not an issue.

You want more titles? Plug your NES controller from this into a Wiimote and download them for Wii or Wii U. There is your expansion.

That is not expansion. I already have a device to use normal nintendo and super nintendo controllers on my wii. And free or not free by default virtual console is limited to games you can have. They don't have every single nintendo game ever made. And don't allow for homebrews. So that is not expanding much.

And obviously the money for this go to big N and the game copyright owners how?

I will definitely support Nintendo and buy this. I was just saying that for those that are complaining about rom support, there are alternatives. I'm all about supporting the copyright holders. I already own most of the games on all of the various Flashbacks and classic compilations, and I still make it a habit to purchase them to support the developers.

I like it.. and will buy.

Although I'm curious what Donkey Kong is going on there. My bet is it will be the minimal original NES version, missing one level, missing animations, cut scenes, tricks, etc. Because releasing inferior NES donkey kong dozens of times is the Nintendo way! :)

Nintendo created an improved version of Donkey Kong for the NES, which includes the formerly missing conveyor belt level and some other enhancements. They released this game preinstalled in a special edition of the Wii in Europe, as well as a downloadable Virtual Console game for the 3DS. It would be a pleasant surprise to find out this is the version included in this system.

..wait, what? That version is available on the 3DS shop? I'll have to take a look.. purely out of curiosity.

Back to the subject.. this was discussed on IRC and while we all hope it's that version as well, we would totally NOT BE SURPRISED if it turned out to be the original lame NES Donkey Kong that was included. That would be so Nintendo.

One thing very positive in this is that the HDMI output should up the bar for similar devices in the future.

I always liked the idea of direct-to-TV boxes but they were always made cheaply with bad video and sound. That is hopefully not a problem here.

It has never been made available anywhere in the states that wasn't part of some limited edition Wii bundle or the 3DS eShop promotion where you had to purchase full price retail downloads, most of which that I already owned on card. Doesn't bother me though. I've been playing a repro of it on my NES for years now! :ahoy:

I actually seriously doubt Nintendo includes it, unless they throw it in as a surprise Easter Egg. My theory is they gotta hold back some killer bonus stuff back for future reissues. If this device flies off shelves, there will likely be an SNES Mini and NES Mini 2 coming out in 2017.

That likely won't fit on the NES mini. That converter is molded to fit on the end of a Wiimote and likely won't fit the slots, and certainly not two of them. I might be interested in a Wiimote-NES converter if it has a corded dongle that plugs in.

I got a copy of the improved DK when I bought Prof Layton for 3DS. It's called Donkey Kong Original Edition. The Pie Factory thing that Kosmic linked is similar but probably not the same...I think I've seen a ROM of Pie Factory with the Original Edition game. It's a little glitchy in emulators but fun to have.

Here's a review of the thing. No idea why they don't just sell it in North America. http://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/3ds-eshop/donkey_kong_original_edition_nes

I agree they're probably not going to include it in the plug-n-play box. While it would be nice to have, we're not missing all that much.

Yeah I've posted the rom for it a couple of times a few years ago on these forums.. But you're saying conflicting information from Agent X.. that it's NOT available on the e-shop (which was always my assumption).

All I want to know is, is THIS DK this the improved version or the original NES version. Guess I could spend the 5 bucks and find out.

No, that is not the "Complete Edition". The link in the eShop is only the three stages and skips the cement level and animations. DK Complete Edition has never been available for North American Virtual Console for either Wii, Wii-U, or 3DS except as as a limited promotion.

DK "Complete Edition" was dumped from the Virtual Console game by Wii hackers who extracted the NES ROM from the actual VC file container. This was leaked online in 2010 literally weeks after the Limited Edition Red Wiis became available, and RetroUSB started selling repros of it. The VC DKCE ROM has a bug in the CNROM mapper when played on NES hardware, causing bus conflicts which can lead to graphical corruption. The RetroUSB repro altered three bytes of data in the ROM code to prevent said bus conflicts.

But to answer your question, yes, the ROM floating around online is the same game originally dumped from the VC edition put out by Nintendo. It clearly states 2010 copyright on the title screen. "Pie Foundry" is an unofficial name sometimes assigned to repros.

Cool, thanks for setting that straight. I was curious since it was glitchy in my emulator on Android though it runs nicely on the 3DS.

I can confirm with certainty that the DK in the American eShop is the old cartridge version, just three different screens, not so different from the colecovision in that regard.

This is just a Plug N Play System like everything else

It would be cheaper if Nintendo just use Composite Video out, and I knnow it's not 1994 but just No

This looks like a great idea and a great purchase for anyone who does not own these games already.

The price point is great, and many classic games are included.

I will buy it just to play Legend of Zelda 2 again and the Donkey Kong games. :)

I don't mean to be rude... but the NES Mini detractors seem like 7800 supporters.

I've seen cats & dogs smarter than Atari 7800 supporters.

I will wait for some reviews... but if it's decent quality I will definitely buy one.
