Nintendo Classic Mini announced

Looks like my ultimate plan of being awash in cheap secondhand units is still a go... just delayed by two years.

Even if I had a mind to overpay a scalper, I'd have zero confidence doing so, given the large number of fakes out there.

I got one of those.

It's shitacular.

Why did I do it?

It was cheap, and I am stupid.

Wow. The entire system costs less than a decent controller.

Casually went into a Target on lunch on Friday and picked up one of the six available NES Classic units there. Target did it right. No online purchase option, in store only, and one per customer at that. I waited two years for this thing and was quite agitated in 2016 with the hype and how difficult it was to get. Now it was normal...thank God.

Anyway, does it live up to the hype? I personally say yes. It is cute, it is Nintendo, and I had a whole lot of fun playing it today and introducing my eldest daughter (13) to the NES. I am really glad to have scored one of these finally.

I did pre-order that 8BitDo controller however as wired controllers are a BAD thing in my house. My younger one almost took the whole system out running past be in the living room. Yeah...the wired controls have to go...

Well you seem to be how I am with it. I was gifted the day it came out with one when I woke up which was slick, never could get a controller. The day they killed them off originally, I found the last in the entire area and gifted that to my daughter(6 now) and she loves playing mario, kirby and a few others on it. And again, still no spare controller. It very well lives up to the hype and it's a great selection good for all ages and tastes really. I think some people just like to moan about things with it and maybe a sprinkle of reality is there but I think much depends on the TV more than anything.

They had a whole stack of NES controllers the other day. I almost picked one up.

And you didn't grab one for anyone here? :( I still need to 2 years later find one for my console and my kids. They were not ample around here, and they got all scalped and collector grabbed up as stores opened with people (many locations said) lining up ignoring the system for the controllers. The speculators were right on them shorting something. :(

I grabbed a couple of them today at my local Wal Mart. They only sold one in the past couple weeks so... I left two on the shelf. I'll buy them in two weeks if they haven't sold. I wrote down the serial numbers. lol

Do they not just take it out and you can dump it in your cart and keep shopping?

No. Walmart and Target are basically the same. They bring it to the electronics counter and hold it until you buy it. While you are in electronics, you can check out anything else in your basket, typically with shorter lines than up front. Unless you've got fruit in your basket that needs to be weighed. In that case, the employee will have to make the long walk to the front of the store and give the item to another clerk who will hold the item until you reach the front of the line to check you out. There's no scales in the electronics department. :P

I'm sure I'll buy one if ever I see one "in the wild." Unless it's locked up in a cage and I have to pay some redshirt separate from my regular Target purchases. You, my AtariAge friends, will be the first to know if I bring one home.

Finally, the scalping will stop. That's a good thing.

Bout damn time...

I found something else interesting. I found a nintendoage dot com discussion. He posted this link.

The new ones and some of the last april 2017 nes classics have the esrb logo on them. First ones just have seal of quality logo on them.

Great. Now everyone needs to get both both boxed variants all because Nintendo moved a stupid logo. Collectard mentality in full force... :ponder:

No need to get up. Its wireless. Plug the retro receiver in to the nes classic or snes classic. Keep the classic in front of the tv. You sit on the sofa 10 feet away. Then sysc the wii mote. Keep it next to you on the sofa. No need to get up. Then plug your sf30 into the wii mote and play. Its right next to you. No need to get up. Then pause the game. And unplug the dongle right next to you. Then hit the home button. Or use a classic controller. It has home button builtin. Nothing to unplug.

Nonono you are over-simplifying it. First you plug the first retro receiver into the NES Mini. Then you pair it with a wiimote. Once the Wiimote has successfully paired, plug a second retro receiver into the Wiimote. Next get a second Wiimote and pair it with the second retro receiver. Plug the third retro receiver into the back of the second Wiimote. Now pair a third Wiimote with the third Retro Receiver. Finally you plug a fourth retro receiver into the back of the third Wiimote and pair an 8bitdo controller to that. This should extend your usable range to about 120 feet by spacing the daisy-chained Wiimotes 30 feet apart. And hopefully it doesn't lag too much... :rolling:

That's why I am using an extension cable. 🤔

I don't need 120 feet. I reciever is good enough. And that is all I have. I was talking about the home button.

In retrospect, down + select doesn't seem so bad.

I'm getting annoyed at that 8bitdo controller. I have that matching black snes one for the Super NT and it seems to perpetually run out of power whether it's on or off after about a week or two which in the case of being off is just annoying. I tried using it yesterday and ended up having to pull out a real controller to mess with a couple games so I shelved it. Wireless seems to be an annoying ass bane at this point outside of the essence of life Nintendo squeezes into their controllers that seem to live by the month, not the day as far as hours go.

You can't just leave it plugged into a charge when not using it? Both of my Switch pro controllers are always being charged when not in use, so they are always good to go when I use them. All modern batteries should have overcharge protection so keeping them topped off shouldn't hurt them.

Tanooki, with all due respect I'm bad enough about buying crap I don't need. Do not tempt me please. I have two perfectly usable snes controllers that came with the snes mini. And a 3rd wireless nes pad I picked up at GameXChange for $6.95. And a retro receiver and 8bitdo nes30, fc30, and snes30. Yeah the ones they don't make anymore. Then there's the Switch compatible SN30 Pro. I have a bonanza of Wiimote compatible controllers at my disposal atm, not counting the actual Wii Classic Controller / Pro stuff. And some Game Cube inspired themed pads by PDP.

Haven't used any of it in a month of sundays, except the Switch compatible SN30 Pro which is surprisingly good with a better Dpad than the original Switch Pro. Never realised how bad the Pro Dpad really was playing stuff like Zelda, until getting my ass handed to me in Donkey Kong arcade when Mario refused to move in the direction I was pushing. So you can forgive me for not picking up a spare NES Classic controller. I may still get one if I see them again behind the glass.

I probably could, but I'd have to go find an empty plug and leave it hanging out of that I suppose. I have actually two of their devices and both are perpetually dead due to lack of use as I have the NES30Pro dual analog device as well I grabbed for the Switch and stuff. I just don't ever think to plug them in, it's not so much like how I could just have an active USB port on a PS3/PS4 and just leave the cable hanging out of it as that's not a choice on the Super NT. I would think the Switch probably would work on its dock though but never tried it.

Kosmic I know, mostly just griping I can't find a couple of them due to well Nintendo.

What is wrong with this controller?

People who play NES games generally do not consider this button layout to be a good design. We have seen this design on many, many clone or knockoff controllers made in the past 30 years.

The list of issues with 8bitdo products is legion, pairing issues, too easy to hit diagonals on D-pads, latency, battery life, firmware issues and now layout.

A NES controller needs independent turbo buttons and more than one setting for a button! Try playing Contra, Super C or any other game that assigns one button to fire and one button to jump with this layout.

I'm confused with how that layout would be an issue. The primary buttons are right where they need to be with turbo as a plus just above.

I didn't know how much of a PITA that 8bitdo stuff was when I got the NESPro30, and the SNES30 came with my NT. I wouldn't buy something of theirs again as the battery life is shit and you're right about the pairing issues to a point and definitely the diagonals don't feel right in a few titles either. I never really felt a latency problem but that probably exists too and I haven't done the right game to expose it.

The biggest problem with that controller is that it won't come out until August, if the Amazon listing is to be believed. I never played Contra or Super C with a turbo controller when I was a kid and I don't need it now. It'd be nice if turbo was a slider, but the turbo is the least-interesting feature of the controller.

You can't hit the turbo B button and the non-turbo A button without mashing the rest of the buttons, so jumping in Contra is an issue if you want turbo. Not a deal for me but I could see how people who want turbo would be unhappy.
