There's got to be some kind of story as to why the Lynx looks like this. Do you have any information?

Looks like a custom job by a 10 year old. If it works, strip it down to just plastic parts, remove anything loose, sandpaper the rest, spray primer to better cover up old discoloration, then your favorite paint color. Let it completely dry, then reassemble and post the result.

It's the badly cut-out hole for the screen that's bothering me most. The rest, if cleaned up, I could live with.

This was someone's childhood era customized lynx. He posted these pictures on a different game forum circa 2008. I just happened on that topic while looking up other stuff. No idea what the current whereabouts or condition of this lynx are as of 2016.

Hm. What happened to those red "Marlboro Go" Lynxes that used to pop up now and then on eBay?

Probably ended when that one seller ran out of Lynx for parts or repair. At one time he had like 500 and was selling it for I think $15 or $20 a pop.
