Mark Trombly on the Atari 5200 Fanatics! Facebook page shares an update..."Who is ready to start 2021 with something new?

The first run of 8 is just about ready to go!The goal of this project was to connect a modern style USB controller to the 5200 since most people are using this type of thumb-stick.Some cool features; Pause from controller (for games that support pause).Single controller for 2 controller games like Robotron.'Trackball' like mode for games like Gorf or Missle Command."

Our resident expert Steve on controllers and adapters will be getting one of these units and making a review video on his Wired Up Retro YouTube channel. The unit is being mailed to him shortly so hopefully we will have answers to these questions in a few weeks.

These are the controllers that the maker of the unit says work with his adapter

I am sure if there's more Steve will find which other ones will work as well.

And does that also fix the problem with Qix and Vanguard, or has that issue been ignored?

Dont know as I dont plan on getting one of these and their updated version with original controller plug in is still a work in progress.

For me all the issues have already been solved by Edladdin Controllers from @edladdin with the Super52, the Ultimate 5200 controller. So I am patiently awaiting my Super52 from Ed :)

+1 for the Edladdin Super52. I can't wait for this to become available.

How do they plan to install the 12 keypad buttons, the S/P/R buttons, and Up & Down controls...so that the user can navigate an AtariMax cart menu?

Good question. But another AA member had made paddles for the 5200 also but I think they only work with original carts.

Yes, others have made 2600 -to- 5200 Paddle conversions...which is seemingly no different functionality-wise, from this RetroGameBoyz version, except those started as quality ATARI products, with ergonomic molded plastic parts...not 3D printed.  If you're going to go to the trouble to design and create a new Paddle Controller and it's housing for the 5200...why not add the necessary functionality.

If I'm not mistaken, there were technically only 2 "paddle" games officially ported to the 5200 BITD, Super Breakout and Kaboom!, and both of those, even playing from the original carts (not using an AtariMax where menu navigation is required), still require additional keypad buttons for game/player selections, over just the simple Lower Button and Start Button, that are normally installed on these homemade versions.

There was also this one:

...which would let you do everything from one full-featured Paddle Controller, without plugging/unplugging controllers, and/or requiring the use of a secondary controller/adapter.  I think more people just need to think outside the box, shoot for the stars, and not simply settle for the cheapest/easiest way to do something...that kind of, sort of, works...sometimes.

I'm sure its been brought up elsewhere on this forum in the past, but it's also fairly easy to take the potentiometer out of an original 2600 paddle and swap it into the 5200 controller. I've done a couple of these. They work great for Super Breakout and Kaboom. Just search Atari 5200 paddle controller on youtube. There are a few methods that differ slightly but its the same basic idea. One also adds a switch that works as a shifter for use with Pole Position. I did not add that to mine.
