Adam Data Drive Issue

Anyone have a clue why this happens:

Have a DDP that reads tapes just fine - but after reading them they are unreadable - if I reformat and put stuff back on the tape(on a different drive) they work just fine - no damage to the tape - Is it a magnetized head?

That is the worst kind of problem...destroying your software but thinking it's OK!

 

Maybe those tapes lose the top (loose) layer of magnetic material on the first pass as it's being read correctly, but enough remains attached that the subsequent runs don't damage it (much). Old tapes do become fragile.

 

Normally, I would suggest making new tapes with brand new media for actual use, using downloaded image copies, whenever you can find them. That might be practically impossible in this situation, but I think I remember reading somewhere that you can rig up a way to read your tape image from disk through the tape interface. Then it's just a matter of getting the tape images onto your hard disk, or floppy, or CD/DVD.

I would say that the read/write head of the Data Drive has to be the issue. Nothing else would make sense especially since you can use the data pack in another drive with no issues after reformatting and placing data back onto it..
