Ghostbusters Tape and Atari 600XL

Recommended Posts

A standard 600XL had only 16K of memory. I believe Ghostbusters required 48K of memory to run.

You can often find memory requirements by looking at the box scans at Atarimania. There was no memory requirement listed for this game on the tape version, although it did say "New XE, 800XL, 130XE" at the top of the package, which does give you a clue. But looking at the disk version box, you can probably figure it wouldn't be too much less for the tape version.

I believe the data for the speech wasn't turned off for low memory sizes so I'd expect 48K would be the minimum...Get a ram upgrade asap, you will need it for many games etc..

That game requires more than 16K it looks like. Many of the more interesting games do and if you want to run anything from floppy or HDD one day a RAM upgrade is pretty much a necessity.

If you have even rudimentary basic soldering skills a 64K upgrade is trivial for a 600XL, just requires swapping 2 chips and soldering 3 wires. If you don't, there's options for external RAM upgrades.

Incase you missed Kogdens post above I'd give it real thought to get yourself or someone with even basic soldering skills to do the upgrade that way as it will be cheaper than a 1064, its nit a big job and saves you having a lump hanging out the back of the 600XL.

Size, can matter :)

The 1064 will make it a bitch. 3 wire 2 chips enjoy 64k.

I'd forego the 1064. The 64K internal upgrade is quite painless. If you go external, the RAM 320XL is a much better option if you can find one. It will not only give you 64K base RAM but 256K of extended RAM as well. I have one of these on my 600XL nowadays. It's much smaller than the 1064 and doesn't add extra bulk. They are pretty hard to find unless you can find someone that wants to get rid of theirs.

I'm just imagining the rip off ebay prices...Maybe Best could have a unit but I'd do the soldering you mentioned every time..
