What are those things in Missile Command?

I've been wondering about this for some time now. What are those things that fly across the screen that aren't the bombers? I always thought they looked like alien ships with blinking lights and two eyes:

 

Now, according to Strategy Wiki, they are satellites, but when I think of artificial satellites, these are the ones that come to mind, and they aren't even inside the Earth's atmosphere:

 

After some searching, the closest I've come to is this (the Sputnik satellite):

 

So, what have you seen those things in Missile Command as? And what are they actually supposed to be? The type of satellite I've shown in the last image? And if so, is there a name for this type of satellite? Since I only know the name of this specific satellite, Sputnik.
