As voted on by the subscribers, here is the remastered version of Battle of the Ports - Golden Axe. The original video was published way back on 17th November 2013 and was the 9th show in the series.

C64 did have 2 enemies on screen at one point, but they couldn't resolve the sprite flicker issue

How on earth Zzap 64 awarded it a Gold Medal was beyond me.

By the power of money.  That's the only way they could have.  Or maybe they were just idiots?

Advertising revenue I would wager, lot of ads for it in the magazines at the time.

Same reason Amstrad Press etc gave Afterburner great scores.

Double page adverts in magazines went a long way.

Some quality plop this time - Strider II, not Strider 2

The background info and cancelled ports, plus farcical claims by UK Press make for more interesting reading than actually playing this on any format.

Would love to know how the development team got such crystal clear speech in on the Mega Drive version though.

Easily some of the best i have heard on the system.

The same way as Mega Drive games like Altered Beast and Sega Master system voice samples. They shutdown the entire game and the hardware does nothing but run the sample, then resumes the game.

Altered Beast actually begins to play the music in the first stage before cutting it off in the middle of the first note, as the game freezes to play the voice clip, then resumes the actual game.

Some games like Thunder Force IV only shutdown all audio to play samples. Other games use misc techniques, like running audio off of the main cpu instead of the Z80. That way more than one sample can be played at once.

Mega Turrican is a good example of quality samples being used in a game without any noticeable compromise.

Here's a very rare chance to get an outside view of a trip from the bottom of Honshu japan to the top of Kyushu Japan all in real time via the JR Kyushu Kagoshima Line. JR never have the windows open on trains but due to the Covid-19 issue a few weeks back, they did! What a chance to get actual outside footage of the train travelling.

Another view request this week on Battle of the Ports.  The almighty Wolfenstein 3D

I enjoyed the video.  Also, I gotta say I really liked what was done with the Jag and 3DO ports.  Take care and keep up the good work!

What was one originally a Sega Saturn exclusive ended up being released on everything bar the Sega Saturn.

Been updating Core Design site with info on this one.

Core really had an amazing amount of press coverage for such a mediocre series.

Here we go with part 2 top last week's Frogger video. In this video we take a look at 10 more ports. Yes, there are still some missing due to being unobtainable hut I feel there are some good additions here such as the Colecovision and the obscure Dragon 32.
