Rybags #26 Posted August 31, 2016 Weight of the iron has nothing to do with it... the conduction of heat into the pin which melts the solder is what does the work. The amazing thing for me at first was that you'd expect it the chip not to work or plastic shell around some ICs to melt when doing it, but that doesn't happen if you do it properly. The logic behind cutting pins beats me. By doing that you get the situation that the pin will just want to move around like a spoon in custard as soon as the solder melts which prevents you melting it sufficiently to get it out with one sucker application.
