Weird speech synthensizer

Recommended Posts

I was just looking at the pcboard for my speech synthesizer, and noticed something strange.

The piggy-backed chip in there only seems to be soldered on one side. Anybody see this before? I'm too tired to take apart my other speech synthesizers ( this one was on my Rave PEB card ) but will have to take a good look at them tomorrow..

It is kind of a weird (wierd == something I've never seen before) chip too. CD2326A-NL, doesn't appear to make any contacts on that side of the chips. I suppose that is just how these ROMs are packaged... saves on solder :)

The 28-pin speech synthesiser memory chips only have internal connections on pins 1 - 14. They appear as one-bit (serial) or four-bit (parallel) output.

That is cool to know. It freaked me out at first glance, wondering how it functioned.
