Sonic Spinball is not representative, heh. The TG16 and SNES had better pinball games (except for Psycho Pinball, which didn’t come out in the US), but the Genesis had some good ones. This is a really weird one, the way stripped down sequel to Pinball Construction Kit.

OMG it doesn’t stop at 999!!!

I did an annual battery check of my Tiny Arcade collection. I played some seriously.

Ms Pac Man: 27370

Very slow and incredibly low framerate, but it’s not not fun. Controls suck.

Pac Man: 21090

Faster and better framerate, still way too easy for the first few levels (ghost actually seem to avoid you), still bad controls.

Q*bert: 4675

OMG this is a GREAT port. The Micro Arcade version that has intolerable sounds is even more mystifying because this has the FULL arcade sound set. It’s well animated and normal speed and plays well. The powerups drop too often on the first level, but other than that it is one of the best releases in the line. Controls suck though. Why didn’t they use this software on the much more playable Micro Arcade form factor??? What a maddening company.

No photos taken/scores recorded:

Dig Dug and Galaga (cocktail table) have horrible framerates, more like slideshows than games. Dig Dug doesn’t let you hold up rocks, so it is unplayable. Galaga is too cramped and arbitary.

Frogger, like Q*bert, has arcade sounds on the Tiny Arcade instead of the Radio Shack LCD beeps on the Micro Arcade. Not perfect, bad framerate, but it plays well enough.

Capsule reviews:

Buy: Frogger, Q*bert, Space Invaders

Consider: Pac Man, Ms Pac Man

Avoid: Galaxian, Galaga, Dig Dug

Hmmm, somebody swiped my Tetris one!

Some more time with Dragon’s Fury (aka Demon Crush). It must show mercy when you incompetently rush to your final ball, because all my better games in this run started out by losing two balls right off the bat.

I don’t know what I did in that first game because I played much better in these and ended up with way lower scores. It seems that just killing the demon monks in the top playfield over and over and over again is the best way to rack up a mediocre score.

Oh man, the Lynx one is worth sticking with! The jury is still out on the 7800 version for me

I do like the little store and the bonus levels. Plus the scrapyard theme fits my real world occupation. The floaty jumping and limited throw distance annoy me though, making return playing limited for me.
