Well, there was a partial joke the other year to convert a floppy drive to use paper discs with holes, like a punch tape but circular. I don't know if someone took that up seriously.

 

Of course, there are magneto-optical 5.25" disks connected through SCSI, but I don't know any 1541 fitted with similar technology.
