Strange Issue with 1200XL Composite Signal

Recommended Posts

I bought one of these DIN to composite cables.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Atari-Video-A-V-TV-Cable-Composite-Video-Audio-800-800XL-65XE-130XE-/232067429109?hash=item36084bf2f5:m:mhxCVb2Be9ooRoq7kfNg7Pg

It works fine with my 1702 monitor, but it outputs black and white through my capture card. Every other composite device I have works with my capture card. Do you think there is something different about the composite signal from my 1200XL?

Did the cable work correctly on the 1200XL? A stock 1200XL does not have the Chroma line attached to the DIN jack, It only has composite and Luma. Luma would give you the B&W.

I don't remember attaching the chroma line to my 1200xl. It displays color with my composite cable. I don't think the 1200xl monitor jack is B&W.

You say the color shows with a 1702 monitor, but not with the 'capture card'.

I don't know what a capture card is.

Or are you using the RF cable to your 1702?

A fully working cable and jack will output Mono Audio, Composite Video, Chroma, Luminance (the latter two commonly now known as SVideo). I have no idea what that cable on eBay is (since the Atari doesn't do Stereo out that jack). But if you are using the yellow and white lines on the front jacks of your 1702, then its possible the video card can't deal with the composite output or sync to it. The fact you get b/w lead me to believe you have the Luma hooked up... tried swapping it with the red wire?

You should first attempt to figure out which lines are hooked up to which pins on that cable. The 1702 could just be dealing with whatever signals its getting.

There's no guarantee that modern video equipment will handle all vintage sources. Atari video is not 100% standard and some things will barf on it. When I worked at ICD, we were developing custom software for an imported frame capture device to sell under the ICD brand. The device would NOT capture Atari video in stock form and we had to heavily modify one to get it to work. In the end we dropped the project, but I still use the photo manipulation app we wrote.

Thanks, this is what I was looking for. Obviously the cable works for its intended purpose, it converts the standard monitor out Chroma-Luma signal to a standard composite signal which I can plug into any monitor or television, but there's something about the signal itself that the video capture card doesn't like.
