Armor Ambush vs Combat

Recommended Posts

If you limit Combat to just its tank battle subset, then I have to give the nod to Armor Ambush. Armor Ambush has more significant strategic elements, such as highly varied terrains and the ability of players to switch their attack to a second, backup tank. Combat offers lots of variations, but they are simplistic and gimmicky by comparison.

Which one is more fun to play? I have to hand that trophy over to Combat. There's something very exciting about slugging it out with your opponent when neither of you have anywhere to run and hide. And watching your opponent's tank spin like a top when you score the knock out punch is among the most satisfying visual rewards in all of classic gaming. It's funny as hell and lasts just long enough to scream, "IN YOUR FACE!" before the action starts up again.

If M Network wanted to upstage Atari with a new and improved tank battle sim, they should have offered a lot more than Armor Ambush. Atari beat M Network to this game by a good 6 years, and they threw in Bi-planes and jet fighters to boot!

Combat is fun distilled to absolute purity. Is it any wonder they made ten bazillion copies of this game?

Ahaa! That is a great point! The satisfaction of conquest! This has made me check out every tank game made to see how it holds up to Combat.

I played Armor Battle on the Intellivision (which is the original version of Armor Ambush) and I think it's a good game, just different as far as what one would want in a tank battle game. It's more for those who want realism rather than just a typical arcade-type maze shooter.

strat x is definately better as a 1 player game. i played the heck out of it, until i realized that I had played through all the scenery it had. I played the arcade game much later in mame, and I think the 2600 game is actually better than the arcade game.

There also is "Conquest of the World" on the Philips G7000 / Odyssey 2 - I don´t know if anyone knows this game.

It had tank - tank fights , but it was also possible to use an airplane or a submarine.

So it also had tank - airplane or tank - submarine fights.

This game was one of the G7000 games with a large box , with board etc. just as "Quest for the Rings".

My brother and I played Armor Battle on Intellivision as well. We thought it was a lot better than Combat... but then it was on Intellivision, so maybe that's a lot better than the Armor Ambush verision on the 2600. Anyway, the games that we liked the best were the 2 player competitive games.

Combat...I used to love Tank in the old seedy arcades, and the fun at watching the opponent run over a land mine as he tries to get out of your sights  Combat was closer to that at least.
