cjameslv #1 Posted October 11, 2016 (edited) So got my 1040stf abit back and its been great. So much so, that i got from B&C the official TOS 1.4 upgrade, a Gotek drive and flashed it with HXC, even modded the case to look great with it. I just got my lcd in today and was getting ready to install that as well. I got a call from one of my buds asking if i wanted Atari computer stuff for cheap. Well im all about Atari & cheap. So I went over there and it's a... ...Atari 520STE complete with 1mb 4mb upgrade installed with mouse and some boxed games! Only issue is its pretty yellowed, so i'm gonna try to retro-bright it. He told me $20 for all and it was mine, i gave him $50 just because. So i'm sad as now i am going to abandon doing anymore mods to my STF and now gonna focus on the STE! I'll post some before and after once i retro-bright it. What a good day though! So the 1040stf is on the market to fund the ste now if anyone needs a nice and minty one! I'll make a thread over on market page. Here's a few pics anyway: Edit: Pardon my STE noobness, its not 1mb upgrade its 4mb (even better). +Tillek #2 Posted October 11, 2016 A nice "minty" one with a big hole cut in the side? Consider replacing the name badges and swapping the top covers?
cjameslv #3 Posted October 11, 2016 (edited) Ugh your right, i wasn't very clear. I meant minty referring to the color. Not sure what you mean about badges though? Edited October 11, 2016 by cjameslv
Justin Payne #4 Posted October 11, 2016 Have u thought aboutnusing this instead of making your own retrobrite? http://www.sallybeauty.com/20-creme-developer/SBS-760655,default,pd.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=SHO&cm_mmc=google-_-SHO-_-cpc-_-keyword&gclid=CjwKEAjwm_K_BRDx5o-sxq6ouXASJAC7TsFLW2zWMR9zXoFOTopnxo_nIuAsUoHxGVhkNzjz22OgHBoCl6fw_wcB

KLund1 #6 Posted October 11, 2016 How did you get the drive opening to looks so professional done? It looks beveled and straight edged.
cjameslv #7 Posted October 12, 2016 How did you get the drive opening to looks so professional done? It looks beveled and straight edged. Heh, thanks i try to make my mods look the best as possible! I measured it, 3d printed a template, traced it out, used a dremel for straight cuts, filed corners, then used rough to fine sand paper to finish. eightbit #8 Posted October 12, 2016 (edited) Its definitely a nice mod. No longer is it original however. I still want it as I could use it for playing ST stuff from USB But if I personally were to do this (and I have actually in the past) I would have just removed the floppy drive, left the case original and ran a floppy cable to the outside to one of Lotharek's floppy emulators (or gotek if on the cheap). This way you can enjoy the floppy emulation aspect as well as be able to bring it back to stock if need be. Now that cannot happen. From the looks of it is non yellowed and in great shape...but I hate to say kind of ruined or tainted by the cut...no matter how nice it may be Edited October 12, 2016 by eightbit
+DarkLord #9 Posted October 12, 2016 Been down this road before and don't quite understand it myself. If someone wants to enhance their ST and mod it, I'd applaud them for their incentive, ingenuity and energy - not come within a hair's breath of telling them they ruined it. To the OP - You go guy!
+save2600 #10 Posted October 12, 2016 Looks like a work of art to me! After all… we're just talking an ST here. Not like he butchered an Amiga 1000 or anything.
cjameslv #11 Posted October 12, 2016 Thanks save2600, the plan was to add the Lcd to the keyboard and select buttons under logo too. The good news is the hole is small enough that if I plug the original drive back in, it sits flush with no gaps around bezel and still looks good due to floppy drive being same color and having the slanted design on it.
+save2600 #12 Posted October 13, 2016 Oh, the original disk drive still worked then? How rare - that's an entirely different matter. just kidding! We all know it would have gone to shit sooner than later anyway. lol on a serious note, think you should finish what you intended with the LCD and select buttons. Would be the makes for a really awesome ST then!!
+Tillek #13 Posted October 13, 2016 Ugh your right, i wasn't very clear. I meant minty referring to the color. Not sure what you mean about badges though? I mean, assuming you want to put the same upgrade in your 520 STE, pull the name badge off the 1040 top case and 520ste top case and switch them. that way you don't have to re-cut the case and the one you're selling won't have a "defect". Would be the makes for a really awesome ST then!! Yeah, i can offer that as an option if i had a buyer that wanted it. Ahh got ya. I could do that but the ste case is really yellow and i gotta figure out the best way to get it back or close to something that resembles a grey lol.
