Asaki #301 Posted October 25, 2016 its 15 min every 2 hours and a half hour lunch minimum in my state, not even worth booting up a device Same here. I don't know about the Switch, but I've always brought a Game Boy (or a DS) to work, and you'd be surprised how much gaming you can squeeze into 15 minute breaks if you try. Of course, it makes it feel all the more worse when you screw something up and decide not to save your progress, and that entire 15 minutes was for naught. I have never met anyone who couldn't tell the difference between a standard CRT TV and an HD. 720p vs. 1080p is not the same thing as CRT vs HDTV. On an HDTV, with a good setup (especially with a good upscaler), I have to wear my glasses and sit on the floor to notice much of a difference between DVD and BD. I can't imagine 4K being that practical unless you have a projector.
Keatah #302 Posted October 25, 2016 Watched the video on my U for the switch. It looked like the people in it were from another planet and needed to be hospitalized on how addicted they looked to the switch like it had controll over them. They are inside playing vid games, need to take the dog to poop vid games, plane vid games, playing basketball with friends the guy plays basketball on the switch taking a break from really playing basketball, picnic with friends vid games. I wonder who will be the first to marry it in Japan? It's pretty much that way for smartphones. Smartphones control you and you can't escape.

+thanatos #304 Posted October 25, 2016 Yes it does. Hah. For me the new name does not generate near the "WTF kind of name is that?" response that "Wii" did when it was announced way back when. (And holy crap that was 10 years ago.)

Bill Loguidice #307 Posted October 25, 2016 We're all pretty jaded nowadays. I can't imagine anything coming along that would boggle my mind, especially after "everyday" stuff like Forza Horizon, No Man's Sky, and Star Wars Battlefront, which are all amazing games that only hook me when I have copious free time. Well said, but I'm exactly the opposite. Maybe it's my eyesight, or maybe it's the style of games, but I will choose handheld stuff every time, always have since the Atari Lynx and Game Boy systems came along. The best game is the one you have with you ...and that's usually the one I choose to pick up and play, too. Big fat hardware, whether PC or TV, is not for me. I can't be alone in this, though I may well be on this message board. That last thing that boggled my mind was last week when my PlayStation VR Launch Bundle arrived. That was obviously less about visuals and more about immersion. I think we've all gotten used to high quality audio-visuals at this point that really the only way to be "wowed" is through better immersion via VR/AR/mixed reality. Certainly 4K has the potential to wow us with straight up visuals, but it will probably be quite a while before any game can truly be maxed out at those resolutions, and even then the wow-factor will likely be short-lived. As for your other point, I have countless gaming handhelds, and even a Vita and New 3DS XL bedside (along with several tablets, as well as my phone). I play the Vita and 3DS far less than I probably should, often being laser focused on one game for months at a time on a particular handheld, and mostly only playing it during bathroom breaks (ahem). For me, my primary gaming is on consoles, followed by PC at a distant second (the recent release of the new Civilization notwithstanding), mostly because I spend a lot of other non-gaming time on the PC. Of course, as an "old guy" with varied time consuming interests and flagging energy levels, my overall gaming time is quite limited anyway. While I don't have a particular interest in a dedicated gaming handheld, I do wonder if the Switch's hybrid approach that will allow me to seamlessly play console-quality games in the form factor that's most convenient for me at any particular time will in fact become my preferred device. A lot of that depends on the right mix of games and would certainly be helped by a proper and speedy account system and digital store. Nintendo has failed me personally in that regard for several generations, but there's no time like the present to make amends.
Osgeld #308 Posted October 25, 2016 (edited) Trinitron? Loved those CRT's. I will say it does get harder to tell with each new form. But that's not only TV, it's all technology. I remember being in shock the first time I played my Genesis in August, 1989. What a step up from my NES and SMS! Today? Not nearly the difference. No it was a Toshiba flat screen CRT EDTV with component input so it would do all the standard stuff, and 480p edit: 720p = HDTV 1080p = Full HDTV 4k = Ultra HDTV then you gotta watch UHDTV cause there's 2 resolutions for it 3840 x 2160 & 7680×4320 Edited October 25, 2016 by Osgeld
JamesD #309 Posted October 25, 2016 (edited) Nintendo introduces a new game console with gimmicky controllers and underpowered hardware. People criticize the hardware but fans defend the Nintendo. ...reply reply reply defending the switch... Who says I was talking about the switch? Nintendo has entered a rinse and repeat cycle where they do the same thing over and over, relying on a "special" controller and exclusive content to make up for limitations with the hardware. The Switch will sell because it's Nintendo, but it's far from perfect, and it's definitely not a competitor to the XBOX ONE or PS4. It's more of a next gen Vita you can hook to your TV hardware wise. If it can draw the volume of content of the other consoles, it might be what I'm looking for. If not... Mario Kart #1003 has ZERO appeal to me. Some people may be looking for a Gameboy for grownups, but I'm not. The Switch risks being little more than a fast Android tablet with restricted content. It's going to be all about support. Asaki #311 Posted October 25, 2016 720p is HD. Whoops, I meant 480p. I somehow mixed the vertical resolution with the horizontal (same thing, right??).

It's a throwback to the old days of gaming where ads had people displaying all kinds of inane facial expressions and poses, no matter how inappropriate. Zookeeper #314 Posted October 26, 2016 I'm one of those guys who always buys Nintendo systems each generation. Kinda wish I had waited on the Wii U to drop in price, as I didn't end up doing much with it (and I want my Google Earth back!). But I was happy with my NES, 64, GC, DS, Gameboy and so on, so I guess one flub isn't too bad. Hopefully it'll work out. Really, if they just put their noses to the grindstone and provided more variety (or a full-access pass) on Virtual Console I'd be okay.
Osgeld #315 Posted October 26, 2016 I'm one of those guys that has only bought 2 new Nintendo systems (GBA and Wii) usually I see the n and think Wtf is with that controller why no CD drive why no DVD drive dual screens are dumb etc, hell even the Wii was for media streaming first and a few games as a bonus (99$ slim Wii vs at the time 99 dollar video streamer) I'm not excited about this one, but its the first one I'm a while that I didn't think Nintendo was effing retarded
Flojomojo #316 Posted October 26, 2016 I've bought every Nintendo thing even when I said I'm probably going to skip it. They're toys, not computers, and they're always fun. The game focus (not tv, not apps) is nice. I don't need another game thing in the least, especially when my other stuff sits unplayed, but I've got the money and my birthday is around launch time. Unless it stinks out loud, I'll prob have one to play with. If they tie purchases to it Wii/3ds style I'll probably even feel compelled to keep it. The Switch is immensely more appealing to me than the wire-happy, expensive, isolating, uber nerdy PlayStation VR, which doesn't appeal to me in the least.

Flojomojo #324 Posted October 26, 2016 Karen is a female sperg. I had to look that up ... sperg as in Asperger's. I wonder if that's offensive to people here, considering many AtariAgers display those traits, too. Also, why "female sperg?" Do you say "lady doctor" and "female lawyer," too? Andromeda Stardust #325 Posted October 26, 2016 The wife pointed out The Switch is nothing new and has been around since the mid-1970's. Compatibility and support? Unrivaled! B2A.png How do I connect this to the HDMI port? What's gimmicky about them? That they disconnect so you can still use them when the center section with the guts and screen is docked? So far this is the least gimmicky control setup we've seen out of Nintendo since the GameCube/GBA days. No motion, no touch control, no dual screens, no pointer controls, etc. Just good old fashioned buttons, dual analog sticks, a d-pad, and shoulder buttons. Sure sounds conventional to me. Heck, they even showed off a configuration for them that connects the two halves, providing for a more traditional gamepad form factor. Nintendo could've easily eschewed such an accessory after training us to hold a nunchuck in one hand and a Wiimote in the other. What gives you the impression that touch/motion controls are not built in? If Nintendo includes tilt/gyro sensors in the controllers or enables touchscreen capability, why not give developers the option to use said devices? I think there is a high likelyhood the Switch tablet contains a touchscreen and motion sensors (which are bog standard on every Android/iOS device) but Nintendo is wise not to showcase any of those features in the reveal video because they are trying to distance themselves from their existing Wii/Wii-U/DS/3DS legacy. If the Switch tablet completely lacks touchscreen or motion functionality altogether, it would be giving a big one finger salute to mobile devs, from whom Nintendo will likely need support in addition to console devs. MarioKart for instance had the option to use tilt or traditional controls. Many Wii-U games offer both touch and traditional inputs on the Gamepad. If the Switch includes touch or motion control, developers could offer alternate control such as motion, or touch option when using the tablet device. These additional options would not detract from players opting to use traditional tactile controls but rather offer new ways to enjoy the games whether docked or portable. The criteria for developers would be that all games must support traditional controls, with potential for optional control schemes when undocked. This would not deter the enjoyment of users who eschew gimmicky touch/motion controls, but only provide the option for people who chose to use it.
