Hmmm... Is this Paddle only game ? Can it be played in Altirra ?

Yes and yes.

Afaik, the authors are working on an update of ROT that can be played with joystick also.

In the meanwhile you may try this older (joystick-driven) version:

Yes, the gameplay was optimized around the paddle controller and it is really central to the experience of the game. So it is paddle-only.

Works great on Atlirra or Atari800win if you don't have paddle controllers handy. Playing on Colleen android emulator in paddle mode is kind of cool too because you use the touch screen swiping motion.

PS: We are working on joystick support for a future update if we can get it to have a good gameplay/experience (like it has with the paddle). Easier said than done.

Ha! Well, I really do NOT recommend you use that old "Chutes" program! Yes, Chutes was joystick-controlled but it was pretty lame and not very fun!! Chutes was just an early concept and was never completed...it was more of a mock-up.

Rain of Terror was a complete start-over from the ground up and only some very basic concepts remain from Chutes. 100% of the code for R.o.T. is new, much much more efficient code. And in terms of additional features...I don't even know where to begin, so it really is a completely different game.

So my recommendation is to get out your paddles (or use an emulator if you don't have paddles) and enjoy R.o.T. the way it is intended to be played!

By the way, the first few R.o.T. missions intentionally start off at a relatively slow pace so the user can hone their aiming skills and get a feel for the game action. Play it up to mission 5 (after first bonus round) and the action really picks up and the mission orders get more demanding.

As you make it to higher missions you do NOT need to start over at the beginning (to be specific, when you get to missions 5, 9, 13, etc., it will save the achievement status and let you begin future games on that mission if you wish, using the SELECT key).

If any of you would like to put Rain of Terror on a MyIde2 device using the FAT32 Loader (like I wanted to do!), you might have tried it and found it doesn't load up properly as-is.

Copy this version onto your MyIde2 and it will work perfectly with the FAT32 Loader.

ROT4MY2.xex

NOTE: ROT4MY2.XEX only works on the MyIde2 FAT32 Loader!

If you are NOT using MyIde2 then you want this file...

That’s right… by popular request, Rain Of Terror now includes Joystick support !

(it also still supports the original Paddle experience too)

There were a few other minor enhancements in the final version of the game as well.

Thank you very much for making and sharing RoT Eric and Rob!

You guys are very talented A8 coders based on originality and execution of design here: it is derivative but unique too, the shooting of objects is derivative of a few other games/game types but your execution, the end result, is rather unique!

And THANK YOU VERY MUCH for making another game we can play with paddles*; I know not everyone has or uses paddles but for certain games the precision that paddles allow is really a useful addition to those games.

Have been playing Rain of Terror for about a week now and it is an amazing A8 game! :jango:

Both with paddle and joystick control this game seems very Atari circa late 1970's/early 1980's:

Very cool and fun to play, RoT reminds me of 2600 Air-Sea Battle and a couple different skeet/shooting ducks type of games. :)

But instead of clay pigeons or ducks flying, there are paratroopers trying to land safely and take out your AA gun, adding the gripping tension of human combat with ground to air defense.
To me Rain of Terror really feels like an old Atari game, like something Atari, Activision or Imagic might have made at one point. The controls and using both paddles and joystick, the graphics with planes flying and the paratroopers jumping out and the way their chutes deploy, the power-ups available, the sound effects -- it all comes together and feels like an old school Atari, Activision or Imagic title. Maybe even one for 2600, 400/800 and 5200?
Great work Eric and Rob and thank you again very much for making and sharing RoT with the A8 community!
Best Regards
Fingolfin
* Bit of an older thread that discusses other A8 paddle games http://atariage.com/forums/topic/198395-best-8-bit-paddle-games/. therealbountybob's list of A8 paddle games there is a great resource! And appropriately enough RoT's mentioned/included in the thread too. ;)
