spencerhm #1 Posted October 26, 2016 Greetings all. I found one of these gaming (cartridges) at Goodwill. It was $1.52, so I bought it. It looked to be in good shape, but when I hooked it up the video (screen) flickers white bars, disappears, and constantly does this. I took it apart and cleaned it well. It actually wasn't too dirty, but it is a 1979 unit. My thoughts are the video chip. Can anyone offer any ideas on what the problem is and perhaps where to get parts? Any ideas what to replace or what could be the problem? Thanks!
Flojomojo #2 Posted October 26, 2016 That's a rebranded Mattel Intellivision, so I'd look for a repair guide for that system. How does the RF cable look? I'd replace that first.
mr_me #3 Posted October 27, 2016 You can get an rf modulator here. http://leftturnonly.info/ Most chips will have to come from another Intellivision. Do inspect the main board closely. Like flojomojo says try a different rf cable, i suggest an rg-6 cable.
spencerhm #4 Posted October 28, 2016 Is there a test cartridge for these guys? mr_me do you know if the rf modulator is a typical suspect? I just don't want to put a lot of money into this guy in a hit-&-miss process. I checked the unit out fairly well. Found some specs on output power for the transformer and power supply and those units are ok. Which is good, so it's something on the logic board I'm guessing. Anyone know of somebody hording parts anywhere? Ultimately a test cartridge would be great. Thanks
mr_me #5 Posted October 28, 2016 There is a test cartridge, its covered in section 2 of the service manual. https://console5.com/wiki/Intellivision Maybe ask the moderator to move this to the Intellivision forum so the experts there can comment. spencerhm #7 Posted October 29, 2016 Hello mr_me. Very nice link. Manuals and lots of info. I'm not a technician, but I can usually fix most things - IF I TAKE MY TIME. Having manuals is the best way to start. So thanks again for the link!!!
spencerhm #8 Posted November 5, 2016 Hello all. I received a cartridge yesterday; inserted it, powered up and saw a clear, game screen. So this unit is ok for spending $1.52. I'm very tickled. All I did was fill in a few solder joints that were cracked and bought one cartridge for $10. Thank you very much for all your suggestions!
