Atari Flashback Portable FAQ and Compatibility List

Recommended Posts

Top post is now a FAQ. Did I miss anything important or interesting?

Well, I don't know if these might better be characterized as Infrequently Asked Questions, but we do have answers for:

What kind of hardware is inside the Atari Flashback Portable? - The processor is AtGames/Digital Media Cartridge's Monkey King chip, descended from the Titan chip used in their Atari/ColecoVision/Intellivision Flashback home console systems, and the system board has an 8-MB SDRAM chip (although I do wonder if the pre-production and final models may have had some differences here, as pictures have shown slight differences between the two's boards).

How can I access my Atari Flashback Portable's system debug/test mode? - Press and hold the A, R, and S buttons while powering it on.

Great job Flojomojo and Arenafoot for your efforts on the updated list.

Many thanks.

Also just got my adapter cable for game play on the big screen. Red=Video, White=Audio.

Really enhances the experience doesn't it? Makes DK VCS a lot more playable.

Hey doctorclu

Thanks for the reply.

Agreed. Being able to play on the big screen is a great feature and worth the effort of getting the cable. The AFBP should come with it even if it added an extra $5 to the cost.

DK and DK jr. are great but Activision Skiing is one of my favorites. Try game #3 getting a time under 28.2.

I had some trouble finding the correct cable. I didn't know there were so many 1/8" phono plug variations, with different length of plug, and number of insulators, 1,2, or 3. After checking it out I had several types in my collection already but not the correct one. After reading other posts on this site I was able to find one on eBay for under $5. Mine has 2 cables Red/White (Mono-not 3), with 2 insulators on the plug just in case anybody is interested or having issues.

:D Sounds like you have tried the original DK but not the newer one.

Try this, be prepared to be in disbelief that a 2600/VCS can accomplish this...

You were correct. I didn't have this version. It plays and looks great.

I'm off to check it out on the big screen.

By the way, if you know of any other good ones that are not on Arenafoot's latest list of 67 pages please let me know.

Many thanks,

Duke

Duke,

My file has all of the AFP hacked ROMs thru 1/24/17.... with Nukey Shay hacking one every other day I may have to update it soon.

For a list of his (and others) hacked AFP ROMs, go to my list (link is below in my signature) and go to the AFP tab where I have all of the direct links to each one - updated daily too.

Sorry Arenafoot. I didn't see DK VCS on my game list. Did I miss it?

I'm not sure how to access your AFP ROM's list, and AFP tab. I'm pretty new to the site and still learning my way around. If you could give more detail that would help.

Thanks again,

Duke

To emend my previous post, the Flashback Portable's CPU is a Monkey King 2, as indicated in the part identifier printed on the system board (both pre-production and final models). The final model has 8 MB of SDRAM; we don't have a clear look at the pre-production model's SDRAM chip.

You are welcome to check out the take apart pictures I made of the pre-production model I did at one point and see if you can determine anything from that:

I'll add that ROM to the folder in the top post, and change the file name to reflect today's date. I've also linked back to your excellent worksheet on Excel Online.

FWIW, I updated my old thread about the Non-Tendo R.O.B. cart I made years ago.

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/190214-i-got-my-atari-to-control-my-nintendo-rob-robot/?p=3694420

I tested it on the AFP and it does work, and will control the robot when the AFP is connected to a TV, but not as reliable as on a real 2600.

Anyone else have this problem with the Bugs Bunny bin file - the two houses and bullet piles on the top level with Elmer Fudd don't show up when playing the game on the Flashback Portable. When I pay the same bin file on the Stella emulator the houses and bullet pile are present. Other than that issue the game seems to play fine on the Portable.

So I'm a big fan of Surround as per my video below but the snag to that game is it weirdly has you playing with Player 2's controller on the right. Since Surround is not in the FB list of built in games is a compatible version hackable? Or better yet, Thomas Jentzsch's awesome Tron-colored Surround?

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks so much for taking the time in putting this together. It answered a lot of my questions and I was purchased an 8GB San Disk card that works so I was able to place a lot of my favorite games that were not already part of the system. I mostly use the portable during lunch time so it is fun to have a portable 2600 with me to play. I wonder sometimes if I could go back and time and given myself this device back in 1978/79 (not sure the year) that we got our Atari 2600. I probably never would have left the house for weeks.

How do you think you would have reacted if it was possible to go back in time and give yourself this item with a lot of games on the SC card?

I am wondering if someone can answer a question regarding Mac Computers and sending files to an SD card. I am able to put bin files and then copy them to the "game" folder that it wants but when I pull up the list, it seems that the list is not alphabetized while on the Mac folder, the files are alphabetized by name. I have used a Mac program called "Blue Harvest" to remove the extra files that was mentioned that are not bin files but like I said, the bin files appear in non alphabetized order so I end up having to scroll through the list to find a particular game. Is there something I can do to make the bin files appear in alphabetical order when using the Portable?
