Using Atari joysticks on the Odyssey 2

Okay, which models of the Odyssey 2/G7000 have controllers that are detachable from the box(aka without having to do modding of any kind to the system)? I do know that the earliest of the Odyssey 2 systems in North America have grey fire buttons, while all other batches have the fire button red, and that the European G7000 has no built-in power button, and the fire button is black. Why won't the VCS/2600, Master system, Genesis nor Colecovison controllers work properly on any of the detachable controller Odyssey 2s on their own? :? :?

The BJ7600 GY02 and BK7600 GY02 models both had removable joysticks. There are black with red action button removables as well (I have 2).

The reason other joysticks like Genesis and Atari don't work correctly is that the pinouts are different. If you read further up this thread there is a pinout for each.

Yep, what metarog said. I think it's the earliest models that have detachable joysticks. Consider them like "heavy sixers" of Odyssey 2's! Mine has silver joysticks with silver buttons. The converter allows me to use an Atari joystick, which is wrong, but oh-so-right at the same time.

In case you would like to make your own adapter:

Pinouts for the Odyssey2 controller

1 - Ground
2 - Fire
3 - Left
4 - Down
5 - Right
6 - Up
7,8,9 - not connected

Pinouts for the Atari 2600 controller

1 - Up
2 - Down
3 - Left
4 - Right
6 - Fire
8 - Ground

Are the numbers based on looking at the port or the connector?   thanks

Hey there, lost monkey.  Do you have a video showing what's involved on turning a hardwired Odyssey 2 into a DB9 based Odyssey 2 where you could use either the real Odyssey 2 DB9 joysticks or attach a sadgirlsrecords adapter to the DB9?

I ended up making "permanent" adapters for my hardwired O2.  I now have short (maybe 6") plugs coming out the back of the O2, into which all manner of Atari 2600 compatible controllers may be connected.

Do you have a video demonstrating how you did that?  If so can I either use it to do it myself or show it to a local computer repairman?( if it's more complex than something one who installed Intellivision flashback adapters can handle?)

Essentially I cut the connectors off the faulty O2 joysticks I had and wired a cable with a female DB9 and the O2 connectors on either end.   The unit also had major scratches and scuffs so I used some body filler and a lot of sanding and painted the casing.  The logo is a water slide decal with a clear coat.

The pinout for the wiring is available on this page: https://odyssey2.info/articles/2600joysticks/
