I finally own an Odyssey2! Also Bally&INTV Q's

Recommended Posts

Just got an Odyssey2 in trade, I played this system years and years ago at a friends house (back in the early-mid 80's) and always thought it was quite original looking and cool, but liked Atari systems better so I pretty much forgot about it until recent years. Now I own one. I do have a couple of questions though...

I seem to remember a cool game I liked a lot when I played this system years ago, it was some sort of dungeon adventure game, but I forget the name of it...vaguely remember it and that I like it a lot. Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about? Also, I thought I had KC Munchkin, but it's actually a game called KC's crazy chase; is this a sequel to Munchkin?

I need to know from you Odyssey2 owners what the good games to look for are...one last thing, did some games come with keyboard overlays? I seem to remember that dungeon game having one, but maybe I'm mistaken...did the Bally Astrocade or whatever is was called have a similiar keyboard? I'm looking for one of those now...need to get another Intellivision too now, I recently traded it for an Atari 1200XL which I always wanted too, but I still want an INTV, so I'm looking for one again. One question about the INTV 1, 2&3 systems, was the 2&3 more advanced than the original, or just different design and will games that came out when the INTV3 did like Commando work on the original?

K.C. Munchkin was the one that was deemed a Pac-Man clone as was pulled from the shelves. Good game.

Crazy Chase came later and tried to capitalize on the name. I've never played it so I can't comment on it.

I like the mind/puzzle games for the O2.

Pick Axe Pete is an obvious winner and is definately one of the system's Top 3 titles.

You have struck my area of expertise!

The dungeon game you are looking for is Quest for the Rings

(think "Lord of the Rings" without copyright infringement).

It came in a big box with a game board that you played along

with the video portion of the game. And yes, it did come with

a keyboard overlay.

KC's Krazy Chase is a sequel to KC Munchkin, a poor, post-

lawsuit sequel. So try to find the original KC Munchkin. It is

perhaps the best game for the Odyssey, certainly Odyssey's

signature game.

Besides KC, Odyssey2 had several games that were visually similar to

Atari games but had much different gameplay. Some good ones are:

UFO- Looks like Asteroids but plays much differently.

Alien Inavders Plus- Looks like Space Invaders but plays differently.

Many people found this game very difficult because you didn't play

for score like in arcade games. You got one point for each screen

you cleared. The Aliens got one point everytime they killed you.

If you got ten points before the computer, you won.

Freedom Fighters- Side scroller, vaguely Defender-like. Shoot bad guys,

rescue prisoners.

Pick Axe Pete- At first glance looks like screen one from Donkey Kong.

But there's no gorilla, game play is very unique.

My favorite shooter was in fact very original, Attack of the Timelord.

The bad guys moved unlike anything you'd see on the 2600 and there

were some unique weapons fired at you.

There's also Cosmic Conflict, a simple cockpit view perspective shooter.

Imagic also made some games for Odyssey. Demon Attack was an

excellent port. Atlantis wasn't too bad but the 2600 port was much better.

There were also some really bad arcade translations. Avoid Popeye

at all costs. It isn't even recognizable as Popeye.

I think they are all the same, but I think the Atari 2600 add-on for the INTV 2 won't work on the original INTV without modification and some games made by Coleco won't work on the INTV 2.

Actually, I liked KC's Crazy Chase even more than KC Munchkin... at the very least, it's somewhat original. From what I know, they were forced to stop making KC Munchkin due to the lawsuit, so they retooled it and released it as Crazy Chase.

Most of the good games have already meen mentioned. I'll add Monkeyshines to that list though... it's a very unusual game that you won't find on other systems. Turtles is also an excellent game that (as far as I know) is the only console version of the arcade game.

Turtles is my FAVORITE Odyssey game (forget the voice for it though.. one of the most annoying sound tracks in gaming history). Pick Axe Pete is also very very fun. Attack of the Timelord is a good game also. K.C.'s Crazy Chase is a take off on the old Snake game; not Pac Man in any sense but very fun on its own. And for 2 player fun, Smithereen's is as good as they come.

I wasn't a fan of the early Odyssey games but towards its end it came out with some very very good games.

They were all the same, though I guess #2 had a lockout chip (Donkey Kong won't work, but trust me, you won't miss it). The late-80's games will work on all of them as far I know. I need to get a good INTV 3, one I could play all the time, and keep my original (and it's controllers) nice.
